I am in the market for a folding engine hoist and wanted to ask you guys what you are using and what works or does not work? I saw one from Eastwood that looked good and was priced reasonably. There is one from Harbor Freight that did not get great reviews. Another one from Global and Goplus that got horrible reviews. Let me know what's good?

I bought this two ton from TSC. I really like it and use it for lifting a lot of things besides just engines. Folds up easily and doesn't take up any room. (Link needs your zipp to see item)

I have one of those harbor freight 2 ton hoists. Works just fine. never had an issue. Dont buy the one ton get the 2 and you are fine.

I've used an AC Delco one from O'Reilly for many years & it seems to work just fine.

I have a 30 year old TSC and a non name brand. The TSC is twice as heavy as the the non name. Both are built to identical exterior dimensions. Tube wall thicknesses are a different matter. Both are 2T.

They all seem to be made by the same manufacturer, don't they? I have the usual Chinese-made suspect. Inexpensive and handled the 440 with ease.

I have the same one. Works fine. I used it to lift a full oil pan to carburetor 440 that still had everything attached (alternator, A/C compressor, pwer steering, exhaust manifolds)..... No worries. It handled it fine.

I get the HF one's off of my local craigslist. Once I'm done I sell it on CL for what I paid for it. Never had any problems with the HF units.

Regardless of engine hoist, I find it makes lifting those heavy RBs much easier if I use an engine leveler as well.
$75 well spent.

Did you get enough height doing it that way 'Kid?

I used the other method - use the hoist to lift the car...

Show off. Why stop there, just get a backhoe and lift that X. :poke:

I have had my engine hoist that looks to be the same as the TSC model shown in the pictures for well over 30 years. I have replaced the cylinder once & still works great today. It has pulled hundreds of engines over the years between me & my buddies. I haven't used it in years though. it just sits in the corner (1st picture). I now have an overhead crane in my garage on a 8" I beam with a trolley & electric hoist that we use instead (2nd Picture). Much quicker & easier.

I'll never buy anything from Horrible Freight. I've had good luck with Torin products.

Something to think about here, and maybe it doesn't apply in your case, but...for stuff like this that doesn't get used too often, if you have a trustworthy hot rod buddy or two get everyone to pitch in for one and then it stays with who needs it, until the next guy needs it and so on. Rather than forking over all the cash and then having it sitting your shop forever, you share the cost/storage etc..sometimes a little more practical that way (that is, of course, unless it's way too much of a hassle to go get it when you need it)...just another idea

My front end loader was being used by my neighbour to extract a wisdom tooth at the time. :carrot:

Once again you guys have out done yourselves. Thank you for all of the great replies. Grady what kind, brand name is your lift? Beanhead, your idea is unique and I am thinking it may work for me. I have a friend who has one and I may just ask him to let me buy a piece of his. He probably will not let me; he will probably just say borrow it whenever you need it. I guess that's what makes friends, friends. God bless you gentlemen!

Treat it better than if it were you own and return it in a timely manor don't sacrifice a friendship. All should be right in the world.
