Found Myself In The Hospital

Glad that you are alright Auggie, mineral imbalance is serious stuff. Same thing happened to my wife just about a year ago, low potassium, in the hospital 3 days. COVID was just getting started, big cluster fk, doctors didn’t want to touch her, had to get a little shtty with a couple of them to get any action. A banana a day keeps the doctor away.

Thank god you're ok Auggie. Keep an eye out and don't tough it out. I know,we all do it.

Thank God you're ok, the guys are right dig up the bananas, won't hurt you, besides just for the fun of it, buy vitamins and minerals in capsules, hey they even sell vitamins in Gummy bears candy's

Don't throw those peels away either. Your house plants will like them. Just grind them up in the blender and dry them out. Add some to those potted plants once a month.

That's one I didn't know. Great tip.

Glad you escaped that one! Low potassium is one of those hidden killers that people forget about! Damn near got my mom a couple years back. Same type of situation! Start eating those fruits and veggies!

A apple & banana every day!
Absolutely. Been eating an apple and banana every day for many years now. I'm not saying i'm gonna live forever but sometimes your health involves your state of mind and if you feel good about your diet everything kinda falls in place. Take care Auggie.

After all you have been through, glad to hear it is a relatively a simple fix. Continued Good health as you move ahead!

Get well and thank God! I’m guilty of not eating the best myself and never gave that any thought until this post. Glad to hear no damage just some nutrients and rest..

I just hope my little heath issue wakes someone up to pay attention to their health.

Not to derail the thread - I am glad you're OK! - but I had a similar experience about 3 years ago. 45 years old, healthy, good BMI, exercise daily - 1,000 meters on the rowing machine daily, and in nice weather I do 6 miles a day on the mountain bike after work, with a 35 mile ride on Sundays. I'd been feeling a 'pounding' in my chest for about 6 months, off and on, clammy sweats, never really thought much of it until one day I was in my recliner watching TV, I got up to go to the kitchen for a snack, and WHAP! down I went. HARD. I have fallen off a lot of things in my life, but I have never hit the ground that hard, or that fast. Got taken to the hospital (which for me is a HUGE step - I fight through just about everything I can before I give in and go to the hospital) and was diagnosed with atrial flutter - a portion of my heart beats out of time with the rest of it, impeding blood flow because the heart is pumping against itself and it can't move blood through the body properly. Basically, a LOW blood pressure issue. It's a chemical/electrical issue that I'm still dealing with - had a heart monitor on the last 5 days so the cardiologist can evaluate and decide what portion of the heart gets an ablation. They're gonna go in with a scope, and burn the malfunctioning nerves on my heart.

That first visit a few years ago, the doc told me "no more alcohol, no more caffeine" - my 2 favorite food groups! - so I quit both cold-turkey and didn't have an episode until about a month ago. I had a mild one - felt the hammering in my chest, but no lightheadedness and no collapse - and called in, and that's when we scheduled the 5 day monitor. I meet with them on Weds to see when we go in and burn some nerves.

Just goes to show, though - you never know! Nothing had changed in my life(style) other than plain ol' age. I've always been active, and aware of what I eat (if you find candy in my house, I'll give you a car. seriously.). This came out of the blue, but I definitely pay more attention to what my body tells me on a daily basis!

Again - sorry to hijack and I am glad your story came out well. I'm just hoping to help folks learn is all - and if anyone can avoid this experience personally by learning from my history? That makes it worthwhile. :)

A similar thing happened to me a few years back. Potassium is a big deal, and all it takes to keep levels good is a banana.

I too had a scare about 10 years ago and got the typical speech take these pills and watch your diet and exercise blah blah blah. but when no one tells you is what part of your diet and what part of exercise so my wife was tenacious in her research and figuring out the salt to potassium ratio. In the ideal world you need four to six times the potassium then salt. So looking at pre-packaged foods that's when we figured out they don't have potassium, it's all cooked out of it. This is where all the hippies and their eat fresh foods comes into play because fresh food has a lot of potassium.
The USDA says you can eat 2,000 mg of salt and 2 to 3,000 mg of potassium. I try to keep my salt down to 1,000 mg and likewise 4,000 mg of potassium. Which is tough to do. And by the way the average American diet has 4,000 mg of salt.
Naked juice - pina colada has about 2,400 mg of potassium about the highest that I've seen. Coconut water pure is also a good source the 16 oz cans have about 1,000 mg.
Hope you get better. And I'll get off myself soap box now

Glad your alright Auggir, sounds like a close one.. one good smack to the head on a concrete floor could easily be a game changer!

Some scary stuff to hear especially Triple green at 45! Might have to get my **** together, at 44 I still feel pretty good but have definitely been getting more bodily warnings that I'm not young anymore lol. My biggest issue is caffeine, 4:30 AM alarms still don't agree with me and I don't like coffee so.. Take care fellas

That's what I thought too. 0430 alarm for the day job; I own rental properties that can call at any hour with a problem (and currently mid-renovation on one, the kitchen counters went in yesterday and I'm hanging cabinets all weekend now); I own the concert company that keeps me physically active and alert until 2am on gig days (generally after being at the day job till 5pm). But, when I had to drop the caffeine and the booze...it was surprisingly invisible. The first week or so was tough to get out of bed, but I managed. After that...now...I actually sleep better and have more energy than I did before. I've switched to decaf just for the aroma and the activity, and instead of sodas I'm drinking a ton of Propel water and Mio Vitamin water. And Heineken 0.0 ("Heineken zero" - no alcohol) is actually quite good. Expensive as **** for some reason...but it fills the "I need a beer" craving after a hard day's work and you just want that cold beer taste.

It does suck looking at all my good singlemalt in the cabinet though...hopefully after the zapping (ablation), I can ease back into some whisky with my evening cigar on the porch :)

I average a 20 ounce and maybe a can of Mountain Dew a day at work, once I'm home it's milk lol. I'm not a beer drinker but like a Pint of Captain Morgan to cap off the work week working in the garage.. that's about it for me. Kids really slowed life down, greatest thing that ever happened to me but it sure makes staying super active a lot harder. They're all finally hitting the age where they may start taking a few pounds back off of me now though.

Auggie...I have the same issue with low Potassium as well but it was caught during a routine annual physical. I normally eat a Banana daily and was given a supplement to take as well. Never had what you experienced as what I do daily is more than enough to keep it in check. Start eating them daily and hopefully you won't need the supplements like me. Unfortunately, it is what we are going to be experiencing in our life time. It is called, AGING and there sadly isn't way to stop it and only keep it under control. Stay well and be careful and munch on that Monkey Chow...cr8crshr/Bill:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::usflag::usflag::usflag:
