My brother passed away about a year and a half ago. His wife and I have been slowly going through the mess that is their basement. Well, yesterday we found a box of old models he built as a kid (70's and early 80's).
Among them were a half dozen unbuilt ones still in the box. Just a nice reminder of our youth, and how car-crazed we were even as kids.20231028_162543.jpg20231028_162607.jpg

Cool ! When I was a young fellow, I loved building models. I started in the later 60's with a Willy's truck model. Eventually, I was building WWll aircraft kits for hobby store displays.

As a kid, I built that Warlock and Off-Road van! Thanks for sharing.

A couple years ago, I built a B-17. It's hanging from the ceiling in my office. It was the first model I'd built in over 30 years. It was still as much fun as when I was a young'n.

I built the 1/48 scale B-17G in I think 1973 or 74. I can’t remember the manufacturer, possibly Monogram. It took me months to build. Just painting the crew members was time consuming. It was in a hobby shop for years. When they closed an acquaintance of mine bought it and hung it in his home.

A friend of mine and his boys spend about 10 hours a week building models

Wow, what are the odds?! Yeah, I'm already planning on building the Warlock this winter... unless my search for a 4-spd project car bears fruit. :praying:

I still have most of the WWll planes I built in school.

This should be a wake-up call to a lot of us old farts:

Go through your **** and sell it for a reasonable buck now instead of leaving it for your (often uncaring and unknowledgeable) relatives to either trash or sell for a fraction of its value.

There is also a reality to face ... the people who'll want this old **** are dwindling in numbers AND the economy is so unstable that those willing to spend money are also dwindling in numbers.

A case in point I'd like to make is the Hot Wheels craze. Its been going on for a long time. The old Redlines are valuable BUT in most cases collectors want to sell collections as a whole whereas buyers want individual pieces to fill holes. Collections are VERY difficult to get a reasonable buck for. Furthermore the trends have changed DRASTICALLY over the past twenty years. Twenty years ago people were still collecting hot rods, customs, etc.. These days its all JDM, tuners, supercars, etc.. If you bought a rare or limited edition model 20 years ago for $30 or $40 you can't get $5 for it today.

Get rid of your **** and spend the money on your grandkids !!

95% of my collectables are already gone.......and now I'm working on the stuff that's out in the shop.

A buddy of mine is 73 and single. He has more cars than I can count, models up the ying-yang, trains, diecast and barns full of car parts. He tells me it gives him pleasure. I tell him jacking off will do the same and won't cost him anything !

Maybe he can't get it up anymore?? What might work for you doesn't always work for others....and 'jking' off was never pleasurable for me....had to get the real thing.
