front drum brake question

The drums are different than what is shown at rock auto. The service manual doesn't show these parts either. Do the race housings get pressed off and put on the new drum? It appears i have a bad seal as well. The race housing on the passenger side is loose so when mounted on the shaft the drum has excessive play.

Other than spending a small fortune to upgrade to disc brakes how can i get new drums with the race housings, or can the housings be purchased seperately?

when you buy new drums you have to use your old bearing hub. the drum is staked to the hub from the factory. i don't know if new hubs are availiable.

What is the method for removal?

The factory process "Swedges" the factory drums to the center hub with the original wheel studs however, over time they can and often do loosen up causing the play issue between the hub and drum when the wheel/tires are removed. The drums can be replaced if needed but the center hubs are not reproduced by anyone that I'm aware of. When the wheel/tire is reinstalled to correct torque specs; the hub to drum play shouldn't be there............perhaps a tiny bit of play for the wheel bearings is all you should feel.?

If you have a bad bearing race and seal; they can both be removed using a "Brass Punch" from the opposite side of the hub. Don't use a steel punch! Brass only. Punch the bearing and seal out first and then clean the grease out so you see what you're doing. Then punch the race to the outside away from the hub. Reinstall a new race using the brass punch by tapping it into place where it seats solid within the hub. I would replace the bearing at the same time. You'll figure it out.
 
The hub is held onto the drum by the lugs. The shoulders of the lugs stick through the holes in the drum and then a machine 'spreads' the top of the shoulders and it locks the drum to the hub when they are mated at the factory. The center hole of the drum should fit snug onto the fit (or register) that's the center of the hub. I've never had a problem with them after fitting a new drum to an old hub but I do try to get lugs that have a large enough shoulder to at least fit into the holes of the drum. Doesn't matter if they are not tight because once the wheel is bolted on, it isn't going anywhere.

You must have been about to finish with your post just as I was getting started...I only type about 40 wpm lol...but I don't like any play in my front wheel bearings but not tight either. It's common to get some play when new ones are installed and wear in a little but it won't be much if any.
