fuel guage not working

hello all,

on my new to me gtx the guy i bought it from said the fuel guage never worked, he installed a new sending unit, but it still didn't work so he gave up
is there any common issues with these that i should look at first?

sunk float, bad wiring to gauge, bad voltage limiter (if other gauges are dead also), or bad gauge itself.

if you are gonna be tinkering with electrical on these cars, get a service manual with wiring diagrams

ground out the signal wire and have someone watch the gauge up inside the car.If you can make the gauge peg out full by grounding the signal wire back at the tank then it's either the sending unit or you need to add a grounding strap from chassis to the sending unit body.

i'm in the same boat.

my fuel gauge is not workin. i found on my sending unit float, the soldering had come off and the float was full of gas.

i ordered a new fuel sending unit but I can't fit the darned thing back in. plus, i didn't take a look at the orientation of the faceplate of the sending unit before i pulled it out.

tube on left, stud on right....or...tube on right, stud on left????

i got the service manual but going by the resistance values in the book will lead me to install the sending unit upside down...at least thats what it looks like to me.


oh well. will get at it next weekend.
