So I just got the Satellite back from the shop after having a new tank put in. I drove it for a few days and noticed that the needle stays at the 1/4 full mark. OK, the sending unit needs adjusting I thought. I decided to put gas in. I put the nozzle in the filler tube and a couple seconds later out pours gas. I look down the tube and low and behold there's gas floating up the tube.

I know they didn't transfer gas from my old rusty tank and they only put in $36 worth of gas in this new one, so there's no way it was filled. Plus I woud've eaten up about 5 gallons driving in for a couple days.

My guess is that the tank is slightly off angle and the gas is backwashing up the tube or something. The breathers are connected. I got under the car and the tank seems fairly level, but it could be off slightly.

Has anyone experienced this?

Yep on my 69 RR tank the gauge was driving me nuts with that staying at 1/4 mark then running empty on me. I had my dash apart and adjusted the the gauge itself so when it was full it went to the full line or a bit over so empty really is empty now.

I had made sure the cluster was good, originally it was burnt on one solder joint. Also made sure the sending unit was grounded well, sometimes that ground strap gets a little loose and causes problems with the reading.

Also on some of the new sending units they have different set points then the original factory ones and some of them have little tabs you can bend to adjust the stop points for empty and full. You can go empty one day then pull the sending unit to check it out.

If you find out what it is let me know.

Yeah but that doesn't explain the gas in the filler tube. I think the tank is off kilter maybe and the gas is backing up the tube. The sending unit is another story. It definitely wasn't set right though.

A week later...still on a 1/4 tank!

When I first got my RR I thought there must be something in the tank, It would say 1/4 but be empty but and then only take 8-10 gals at the station. I though there has to be some crap sitting at the bottom causing the sender to be forced up.It's on my list to replace the tank get a new sender and filler neck grommet.

I really don't think its possible to put the tank in wrong. The straps are just the right length and they are mounted in such a way that there's no room to go one way or the other.

the tank only goes in one way ,,,or it aint goin in. are you sure you dont have a vent / breather issue? im guessing by the avatar the car is a 69 Road Runner. the worse thing they could have done was put the filler behind the license plate. My 70 Road Runner spits gas too if i fill it too fast.

as far as your gas gauge issue......if it stays on 1/4 all the time....either the gauge is broke or the sending unit is. some new sending units are not compatible with the old gauges

I am having similar problems, gas tank full to the filler tube and gauge does not move. I put in a new circuit board and some new gauges during my restoration. All the gauges work except the fuel gauge. I put in a new sending unit and made sure the grounding strap is correct. I am pulling out the whatever hair I have left.......will keep you informed of what I find.

ground the wire to the sender at the tank to check wiring and gauge.(should go to full)sender could be bad, only way to test it is to do out of car with an ohms meter while you move it.gas cumming out the filler while your filling sounds like a venting issue as said above.check your vent tube by disconnecting it and blowing in it with gas cap off.should have free flow of air.

Yeah the breather tubes are hooked up, but I can't tell if they're functional. Probably a big *** air pocket at the top of the tank. I'm thinking the nuts that hold the straps for the gas tank may need adjustment too to lower the front of the tank. It appears the front is very slightly angled up. On a 19 gallon tank I would think that could send a lot of fuel to the rear. But maybe you're right the breather tubes might be blocked, not allowing the gas to fill the tank.

I feel your pain. I guess we need to check those filler tubes! How? I don't know!

the worse thing they could have done was put the filler behind the license plate.

But...where else would it go??
