Im getting ready to replace my sending unit with my newly rebuilt original. I ordered a new locking ring and rubber gasket to be on the safe side. Last time i put a new sending unit in before mounting tank i put some diesel fuel in and stood the tank on end to see if there was any leaks around the sending unit. Is this acceptable to do or am i damaging the unit. Thanks

Since diesel has a lower viscosity to gasoline, it won't be much of a leak test IMHO.

Use normal gasoline if you must test in this manner....but be careful not to smoke while performing these tests....we would hate to lose such a valuable Forum member.

Use an ohm meter and check for range 0-70 ohm.

Hope the lock ring isn't one of the cheesy thin ones. Seen several threads on leaking tanks.

Haven't blown up an airplane wing yet and I've been doing this for 25 years... it only takes about 0.4 psi to inflate the condom and will show if the sender gasket is leaking.. or a supplier weld.

Maybe, but there could be a little fuel cell in your future.
This is going to be fun.
I can envision Steve walking into the local Mom & Pop pharmacy and requesting one. "Yeah, i just need one condom, preferably one of those large ones so I can see what's going on. Oh, and not one of those lubricated ones, it might fly off."

The air test does work though, use soapy water mix to find leaks.

You actually want the lubricated as it helps seal it! Use a large elastic to secure it to the filler hole. I was just making sure the son's GF hadn't pin pricked his stock !!

I cant recall the last time i used one. I can just see explaining why i need to buy one.

Reuse the old lock ring all the aftermarket one have issues. I sold over 100 nos rings trust me on this.
