Hi can you tell me what you guys use to grind the ali when you gasket match and port ali manifolds and heads. Any links to sellers would be appreciated.
Thx for looking
For me I just used sanding roll bits for aluminum on an angle grinder. And we have dremel bits for the cast iron course you can use them on aluminum just need a lot of oil due to aluminum clogging up the teeth on the bits. I just aline the gaskets up the best I can bolt them in place and mark with either a punch or a market and then open it ports up to it. Blending the rest of the runners takes a bit. I actually at some point used sand paper and use my fingers.
If you want to cut aluminum with a die grinder you need a bit with very few flutes. The carbide burrs that you typically see are good for cast iron or steel but clog up with aluminum. The burr assortment in the pic is for iron and the single bit is for aluminum. Also, don't use the long bits on a high speed die grinder. What will happen if you go too fast is the shaft will bend because it can't support the force.
Happens on short shafts too lucky for me I was working on aluminum and a sanding bit and yea put on a new sanding roll and blimped the grinder make sure it was on and the whole bit broke and smacked my eye. I know stupied me for not always wearing eye protection. Never did that again lol
Make sure you don't match the intake port on he manifold exactly to he intake runner on the heads. The intake should have about a 1/16th "lip" that hangs into the cylinder head port. On other words, the intake port on the manifold should be slightly smaller than the port in the cylinder head.
Mock up a gasket on the head and on the intake and use some machist dye and a scribe to mark the gasket opening. eBay or summit racing sell all the sanding rolls and carbide tips you will need.
Go carefully. You can always take more material out but it's pretty tough to put it back.
