I was searching Ledgendarys site earlier & checked their new items. They have Gator Grain vinyl tops as an addition but I couldnt find an actual part number or a price for them. I had a 70 Coronet with a gator top & I loved it and would love to put 1 on my 70 Bee that Im currently working on. Does anyone have any information on these tops?:pimp_daddy:

My brother's '70 Bee had one, he replaced it with a Legendary one a few years ago. Probably gonna have to call them for details.

I love the color scheme your brother used on his Bee. I dont think I would have had the guts to attempt it myself without knowing how it would turn out.

The gator grain that they produce is different than the original so if you are looking for exact repo you will have to find NOS which is NOT out there.

Gator grain charger

My 70 Charger has the Gator Top from the factory (V1G on fender tag). I had it replaced with a top from a company in the western US. The Kit was a perfect fit and looked exactly like the original in my opinion.Peter J

Who was the company, how long ago, and how much did it cost?

There have been multi-page threads on this subject in the past on Moparts.

I agree with Peter, the one my brother got was just like the original. He got his 3 or 4 years ago. Want to say he paid somewhere around $400 for it?? Not sure.
Brothers car was burnt orange, he painted it long time ago with lacquer and it was cracking and looking pretty bad so he buzzed it out and shot it flat black. He runs a sign shop and made the gloss black C-stripe.

I got in touch with Ledgendary this morning by phone about the gator tops. Got a price quote of $1295.00 YES thats rite $1295.00. AGAIN that was $1295.00. I couldnt believe what I was hearing. Why would they so much more than the couple hundred bucks that I have found the other type tops for? Anyone know?I am very curious to find this out.Geez

You'd think they wrestled the damn gators to make the tops.. Funk That!!! They look cool but thats redonkulious!!!

I just found a company on Ebay that sells gator vinyl by the yard. I wonder how hard it would be to build my own or have 1 made? Prices are anywhere from $15-$20 per yard.

I looked up the info mine is from SMSauto in Portland $350-$400 I think. They are great to deal with.. Peter

Thanks for all the replies guys. SMS is sending some samples of their Gator tops. They quoted me $450.00. Thats a lot better than Ledgendary. Although I still plan on purchasing the rest of the interior from them.

:thinker:that looks smokin hot! i think that started in 70 . ya think that it will work on my 69rr?

I had to laugh when I saw that top! I used to have a picture of a Creature From The Black Lagoon figure that I made for my avatar, and I used Nuvtex textured vinyl to make the skin for it. Nuvtex is who makes most of the faux leathers that are on the market, and they are very high-quality products. I was going to use their gator skin in green, but as you can see in the picture posted earlier, the back scales are bigger than the belly scales, so I ended up going with Nuvtex Boa skin that had more of the smaller scales I needed for the Creature.

Those Nuvtex vinyls come in a bunch of different patterns and colors. You can do gator, crocodile, boa, dinosaur, rhino, and others. You can check out what all they make at http://www.nuvtex.com/. The stuff costs a little less than $40/yard for cut yardage, but that's with a 54" width, so you get 13.5 sq ft of coverage for each yard, which is quite a bit of fabric. I bought three yards to make the 99 pieces of skin on the Creature and ended up only using about half of it. You can buy the fabric direct from them and have any local shops that do vinyl roofs make you a roof out of it just like they would using any other vinyl, so you don't need to pay extra for a kit. Or if you know how to sew, you could make your own top.

Here's the Creature in his suit. You can see the fabric lends itself pretty well to curvy, multi-angle, application.

what color is that 70 bee?

It was origianlly burnt orange, but it was painted in the early 80's with lacquer. It was starting to crack and look pretty tough, so he scuffed it and sprayed it flat black.
