Shorts and sandals while working with molten metals? I've visited aluminum and iron foundries in the course of my career and the workers all wear heavy denim clothing and gloves covering their entire bodies, even though it's often hellishly hot in these facilities.
Maybe he thought he could pour some of his beer on himself if some molten aluminum had splattered on his legs or feet?
