When I was a kid my dad let me watch Conan the barbarian with him and I remember even then thinking, wow the music is pretty cool in this movie.

Year or so later and I got to watch maximum overdrive in a motel room in Ohio with him, we were there on a trip so he could go to a big motorcycle swap meet in Wauseon.

Anyways, now that I think back about those two movies and their completely different soundtracks - one ac/dc and the other is basically orchestra, I’ve come to the realization that soundtracks to movies used to be awesome and something that is missing from a lot of movies nowadays.

In my opinion the Conan soundtrack rates up there in the top 10 of all time. RIP Basil Poledouris.

What about you, what’s your favorite?

The Dish.

PM - "You know McIntyre, we have a saying in the party"

Bob - "what's that?"

PM - "You don't f*** up...."

Bob - "and?"

PM - "That's it!" Classic scripting.

For me, that is a difficult question to answer. So many great soundtracks out there over the years. You mention how soundtracks can differ significantly and that makes comparisons difficult. Applies and parsnips as it were. I've tried to pare down my top soundtracks from 727 to 340 and then to just a few:

To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)- Wang Chung - superb soundtrack and an excellent, if overlooked, movie.
Interstellar (2014) - Hans Zimmer - tense and emotional, though it does overwhelm the dialogue in the movie at times
The Road Warrior (1982)- Brian May - melds wonderfully with the action throughout the movie
The Valley of Gwangi (1969)- Jerome Moross - neat move (cowboys vs. dinosaurs) and a neat soundtrack. Youtube:
Escape From New York (1981)- John Carpenter - excellent soundtrack by the director himself
Blackhawk Down (2000) - Hans Zimmer (again) - superb soundtrack.
The Beast (1988)- Mark Isham - one of my favorites. Eerie and haunting. Hard to find on CD. Go listen on Youtube:
The Crazies (2010) - also by Mark Isham.
Heat (1995) - Elliot Goldenthal and others - Great combination of artists both for the soundtrack and on-screen.
The Omega Man (1971) - Ron Grainer - Haunting and melancholy. Managed to score a CD from E-Bay when they re-released it about 15 years ago.
Blade Runner (1982)- Vangelis - Like the movie, ahead of its time. Still holds up real well today. Blade Runner Blues is an excellent track.

And:

Just about anything by Jerry Goldsmith - the master.

And:

Lots of western soundtracks (The Good, The Bad, The Ugly, The Wild Bunch, etc.
Honorable mentions:

Maximum Overdrive - AC/DC - A great cross section of their music and it helped them make a comeback in the mid 1980s.

Heavy Metal - Various artists - Wild animated movie with a wild soundtrack.

The Thing (1982) - Ennio Morricone - Spooky and low key.

The Way of the Gun - Joe Kraemer - especially the piece at the end of the final shootout.

O.K. this is getting way too long. Time to go listen to some soundtracks.

The only music soundtrack that made a lasting impression on me was American Graffiti.
For another I really like (that nobody knows) was Rustlers Rhapsody.

Gettysburg
Glory
Das Boot
The Last Samurai
The Patriot
Apocalypse Now
Dunkirk
1917
The Doors
Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
Gladiator
