I need to refinish the original grille and headlight surrounds from my '65 Coronet. I cannot afford to have it done proffessionally. I understand that I need to remove the anodizing before sanding and then polishing. What is the best way to start out? Easy Off oven cleaner? If so, how long do I leave it on? Is there a better way?

I struggled with this one myself... To have it professionally done costs a ton. I bought a whole 64 4-door just for the center section of the grille. The car cost $200.. I had mine dipped to take off the anodizing. Easy off works just fine but sometimes you have to reapply to get it all off. Leave it on as long as you need to get it to release. Five minutes is a good start. I hand and power sanded each and every pit mark off of it and then used a series of polishing compounds to restore the shine. Then I used a car finish polish to seal the shine... The 64 has black paint on it and I choose not to go that way. If you are looking for an exact resto then you can not go that way. To tape it off for paint would have taken about a week and a half so I decided to go full shine and I think it looks better that way in my opinion. My car has so much custom work on it that an exact resto look was not for me...

I sprayed my 63 Dodge grille with Easy Off (get the good stuff, not the fume free or whatever it's called) and applied 3 times over the course of the day. I let it set out in the sun to activate it better and the anodizing came right off.
After doing a little hammer and dolly work I wet sanded with finer and finer grit paper until all was smooth and then polished with mothers polish.
