hawk-rod....... the cleanup

notice in this pic there is a green piece of tape running along the body line, this is the folded piece....... it just so happens to match the car so it is a little hard to see...... the issue was on the sail panel, I kept color away from the tape line

OK, i was looking for the back tape/roll tape/pipe tape, however You want to call it, when You said You ran green mask along peak, i got it....up to then i thougjt You hard taped. Right on Dub.

if I left a goofy line I could always bail it out with a pin stripe

no way...... a stencil if they are lucky :D
I have to mask them out...try to keep em down to 1/8"......so i lay 1/8" cheap brown mask tape along where i want line to be...then with fine line plastic tape, i lay one on each side of the brown, right to each edge, then mask back from each edge with 36" paper......pull up the brown tape, gently scuff the 1/8" area with with worn red pad, then shoot the color in w/ detail gun.....i reduce the color pretty rich too, narrow the fan, & keep pressure as low as possible.
I know Your real name now.....Nice work Mark. jimi

Thank You, Jimi............like I told Hawk, 90% of the time I'm just winging it
Yeah, its always about shooting from the hip in straightening & refinishing. The baffling with bullshit, hi tech terminology would be,..."it is a business of Applied Science."
Most People just dont get that in this game, even Poor work is Hard...
more steps than letters in alphabet.
& any one of a zillion nightmares can occur along the way,, & (groan) afterwards. Especially in refinish. chemicals react....solvents get locked down sometimes.
Solvents vent, for a longer time than most realize,,,, and paints, primers, fillers shrink because those solvents that vent are partial density of the substrate one builds. It's going to shrink , period...why i'm adamant about curing each material applied each time well before working it,....put it on, let it kick...graze it open & let it breath out, then work it. THEN lay another on & repeat procedure. Epoxy materials, from start to final prep are best insurance against post cure shrinkage....but they need long cure windows. Why i hate production work, .no allowable cure time...hi pressure hell's kitchen, bustin ***, for average result at Best. Hi volume shops usually work their monthly budgets around a 35% comeback rate, & its usually refinish shrinkage,, or swelling from solvent lock. Id like to strangle mitchell books. 3 hours to refinish a panel....horse manure.

I didn't realize that You did Hawk's car.....i talk to Hawk, i was keeping a close eye on the build from about the time You were done & He was piecing back together, going thru headache with the computer...cutting & polishing His glass, etc. Sweet car, Major Devotion. Peace Mark, Hey Hawk,,,,Howdy Boss!

^^^^ THIS is why I don't do this stuff myself. I can engineer an electrical system, Fuel Injection setup, etc. Give me a wrench and I do OK. Give me sandpaper and paint and I will almost assuredly screw it up! :realcrazy:

Jimi, you are absolutely spot on. I don't really have anything to ad to that other than sometimes it seems everything needs to be painted twice.....

Hawk, screwing things up with sandpaper and paint is called "experience"

Oh Yeah Mark..."Go back Jack......& do it again".......rule of thumb. Mistakes, lack of foresight are # 1 teacher.
When i see People applying material on the object in the sun,,i just shake my head......i've made the mistake too many times of trying to enlighten them they are rolling red carpet out to disaster......they go on immediate defensive........then cant figure why something swells a month later. But We know, don't We? LOL! Have a Good Day Man.
I'd love too see more pix of Your work, especially in process as well as finished.....up close sectionals.

Exact science versus Applied science Hawkster. You have a Good Teacher in Mark. I think it's Great that You two came together through FBBO, & Teamwork produced such a Bitchin' result.....the Hawk Rod!!
Myself, i'd love to get Your program on the Glass refinishing.....You used slurry compounds for cutting didn't You?
Hey i got an electrical conundrum maybe You could advise me on...point me. The Lexus motor i have for bug.....im not using the toyota brainage/efi because of the fuel system complications. The distributors rely on cam sensors to tell them when & where to fire. I would like to carburete as the existing manifold is perfect for adapting four two bbls to. I can get brand new Real Weber 48's for 250.00 a pop, sans any linkage. I need to figure a way to 'Fool' the cam sensors to do their job....im hoping that i can come up with an HEI set up......im an electrical Idiot
Any thoughts You may have, email me Please. Lexi has 2 distributors, 1 per bank....1 coil for each. Distributors are driven direct off intake cams. ANY thoughts You may have, Please email me.
Have a Great Day Hawk.

For my glass, yes, I did use slurry compounds and a special cutting/buffing wheel. That will still only take care of minor imperfections in the glass. Generally, anything that can catch your fingernail won't be able to be buffed out, at least not with the kit that I had. I was fairly luck as the glass in my car was in pretty good shape. There were one or two scratches that I couldn't remove, and there was some wear in the glass from the rear glass stainless trim rubbing on the glass.

I'll send you a separate note on your motor. I don't think that will be a quick discussion...

Working on painting the master cylinder tonight. The &^%$#! brake fluid had destroyed not only the inner fender paint that Mark just fixed, but also the cast iron paint on the master cylinder. Have I told you I hate brake fluid????

Here's a picture while I was slowly cleaning the master cylinder. What a PAIN!!!

It won't hardly be perfect, but it will clean it up just a bit and hopefully move it from really fugly to passable...

Have I told you I hate brake fluid???? Replacing the behind the dash master in Mangusta(a major bitch)the guy that did it ended up getting a smear of brake fluid on the leather door panel and side of leatjer console,,so i get Exactly where You are coming from.....volatile s***

The Blue balances against Your Lime Green Very Nicely, amazing how such a small deal can bring on such a dramatic visual. Kudos Hawk.

I started a FBBO conversation with you...
Got it Hawk,,,,, i'll hone the map for You more in a reply. The two distributors are electronic, but they are driven by the intake cams..but as You deduced, it's like two four cylinders, each with a distributor and coil...i think they are some type of HEI coil. Anyway i wont hijack any more of Your thread....i'll be back on the PM soon. Hey, Thank You for taking an interest Homie....You're the Man Brau'........Peace, jimi
