head gasket -big block

does anyone know why head gasket on big blocks, blocks coolant passages from block to head
at the top the holes are off centre and the gasket has slits
the bottom of the head the holes are completly blocked

They're only there to release air that would otherwise be trapped in the block, they are not for coolant flow.
