I have 2295 TRW pistons "11.5 to 1 I think" in my 30 over 440.
I'm putting aluminum heads on it and would like to put a thick head gasket
on it to lower the compression a little.
How thick should I go for pump gas and where should I buy them at?
Thanks.

Not sure you can get much more than .050-.060 without going to a Cometic. Tough to reduce more than a 1/4-1/2 point I'd say. Here's an old list from moparts that lists alot of the gaskets out there. Some discontinued. Cometics need a specific surface to be reliable supposedly.

would like to get together a list of composition gaskets with their characteristics and if possible have it archived. for the most part all the different MLS and copper offerings are pretty well identified through the vendors but the composition stuff seems a little more mysterious. feel free to add or correct information, a lot of info is from summit. i "thought" the mopar performance gaskets used to be the 1009 and the detroit but looking at the construction they have no wire and the 1009 does. prices posted are summit list without possible discounts.

fel pro....

8519PT1-basic stock permatorque, no wire, eyebrows, iirc around .041-.044 compressed. good sized bore, will fit bores with large chamfers, good gasket for mild builds. $18 each

17059- this is the marine head gasket, 4.5 bore, no wire, .039 compressed, 10.3cc (stainless construction?) $49 each

1009-race gasket with wire, .039 compressed, 4.41 bore, 9.9cc, often will not work on >4.375 bore. $42 each

1039-race gasket with wire, .051 compressed, 4.59 bore, 13.7cc, clear pretty much any bore or chamber. believe will fit wedge or hemi. $62 each

1095-no wire, steel core laminate, pro stock for the TS head, .051 compressed, 4.62 bore, 15cc $80 each

1105-race gasket with wire, .051 compressed, 4.59 bore, 13.7cc wedge only. $74 each.

mopar performance....

P4349559- race gasket no wire, .040 compressed 4.38 bore, 9.8cc. i thought this was the 1009 but it isn't as it has no wire. $60 pair

P4529455- race, no wire, eyebrows, .038 compressed, 4.42 bore, 9.55cc. $74 pair

victor reinz 3464SG (nitroseal)-performance, .045 compressed, 4.43 bore, 11.1cc. they also have MLS offerings in their performance catalog probably made by another manufacture

victor reinz 3464VC, listed as VR2000 construction. good luck finding any more about this one

detroit gasket(corteco?)-55655HG race, no wire, eyebrows, .038 compressed, 4.42 bore, 9.55cc same as P4529455

ROL HG31130HT- race, eyebrows?, .045 compressed, 4.505 bore, 11.8cc

edelbrock 7325-.038 compressed, 4.45 bore, 9.969cc. $62pair

Awesome. Thank u very much. Kim

If you havent bought the aluminum heads yet, buy a head with a larger cc chamber such as 85 cc
Control your compression ratio that way instead of by guessing at a thicker gasket

Use the compression ratio calculator to figure the exact ratio
aluminum heads can get away with more compression and still burn pump gas

Also playing a part is the cam shaft duration

Also quench might be a factor that you eliminate with a thick gasket
and while Quench can be a point of contention with some, it certainly should be considered

Do the math and know exactly what you have

The 509 is the same cam I run
I have 10.7 compression with no problems on 93 octane
I can also run 38 degrees total timing
I have the speed pro L2355 pistons and 75cc Edelbrock RPM heads with Cometic MLS .027 /gaskets
quench is .047, not the perfect .040 but these heads really woke the engine up

you should be close to being able to run the 11 to 1
use the calculator to figure an exact ratio
Ratios are seldom what they are advertised as
Also using the calculator will allow you to play with different thicknesses of head gaskets

Unless you (or somebody) decked your block a bunch, those pistons are something like .050 in the hole, and real compression with an 88cc promax, or a 90cc 906 will really be around 10 1/2. Plus, that is a heavy piston with a solid dome. If it hasnt been balanced yet, some of the dome can be milled off.
As advised above, you need actual measurements of deck height, piston dome volume (my old trw catalog says 13cc dome) and head cc's. Then calculate where you are with a standard .039-.041 composite, and go from there.
(Im using 2295s, 557 solid, 906s, ordinary felpro composite) and pump premium with a bit of avgas 100LL, cause i can get it, and its cheaper than california pump 91)

I agree, the domes can be cut down, and I don't know if this will help but I have a gently used set of Mopar
.062 shims that you can have fo free. just pay the shipping. Those domes are solid forged, so they can be cut.

Thanks guys. The engine is together. I have run this engine for years with 906 heads and octane booster. But now I have a new pair of heads. I think they are 88cc heads.

Okay, its together and has been a runner, with some booster. If the 2295s are still .050 in the hole, and if your promaxx's are 88cc, i would run a .045-.051 gasket (you have no quench to lose, so no need to worry about that!), and i bet you wont need booster. Do you have to 93 available, or only 91?

Both

Probably best to get the thickest gaskets you can find right now which maybe around .051" or so then pop the heads and check piston to deck before re-assembling with new heads.

Also, your not probably going to want to spend the money on Cometics right now. Since they require a really good deck and head finish, you'd need to tear it all down and send to machine shop. Doesn't sound like that's where you want to go right now.

So would that change the compression ratio a tad lol?
