The heater core in my '66 Coronet 440 was disconnected when I purchased car. Still in dash / no heater hoses attached / heater core tube ends covered with plastic condom type caps. What would be simplest means of testing heater core for leaks without making a mess inside dash. I don't remember if there is any kind of drain for possibility of heater core leak. This is a non a/c car. All heater box, etc., seems original. Any helpful tips here would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe put hoses on there and block one end and install an air fitting in the other, put 5 psi in it and see if you can hear anything. If you put a shut off valve in the line you can pressurize it and close the valve, if the line loses pressure then its leaking.

Its what they for cooling system pressure checks but you'd have to make your own little test header. But a couple fittings, a couple feet of hose, a cheap ball valve and a pressure gauge and you'd make no mess.

same as above but with a pump up vacuum tester.very cheep to buy at most auto parts stores.

Thank you fellas, Ill try and make it happen. If I do have suspect heater core leak, whats a good source? Will also need the proper secure straps and engine heater hose nipples. I believe there are something like pipe plugs installed now. Is it uncommon to plug off a good heater core for any reason? I'm guessing if there isn't then the core most likely was leaking. ???

heater core part number should be 399101. plug that into the auto parts web sites and should give you results. somewhere around $35-$40.
