Hi guys,
Having trouble identifying which Sure Grip this is.
Picked it up on Craigslist but can't figure out which type.
Listed as a Detroit, but I don't think so.
Also, is there any way to test it before I install?
I doesn't look like a clutch or cone type. Looks like a locker to me. Mine is in my car, or i could tell you for sure.
It looks exactly like pictures of a locker on gargle. Sale price $560 just for the locker.
Noise turning is the ratcheting of the clutch... Doesn’t make any noise if you give it a little gas... Well Ok, it locks so one tire has to slip so really the is noise... Just not from the differential..

yes Detroit Locker -- keep it --- best unit out there for a serious street driven car -- you should have no noise when turning as this is the updated unit called a Soft Locker as denoted with the S in the part number -- works the same 100% lock up but a lot quieter than the old units.
i've built a few for fellows and they really like them.
as far as a bench check -- lock one of you axles in a vice and slide the unit over the splines ,, install the other axle in the other side and rotate it in either direction and you should here a ratcheting noise then rotate it back opposite of the initial direction and you should feel it lock up -- make sure the unit is oiled up internally to make this test go smooth.
