Hello,
Have had it with "crappy" come-alongs!

Not properly spooling and then getting tangled/stuck while trying to pay out. Tired of this.

Most cable type I've seen are the inexpensive Harbor Freight type. Maybe HF makes a quality come along..

Need recommendation(s) for a quality "come-along", 2-4 ton, not necessarily used as a hoist but more for general pulling such pulling/moving a car about 5-10 feet.

What do you recommendation quality wise?

I've went through a few myself, bought this one at my local TSC about 3 years ago and it's held up pretty well so far. Loaded a couple big Chryslers, (67 and a 72), and the last was an old truck frame without wheels, literally drug it on the trailer. 2000lb lift, 4000lb pull.

Not a cable but I used lever chain come-along for many years aligning springs and axles on class 8 trucks. I don't know if the HF ones are any good.

Harbor fright and quality dont belong in the same sentence

what you really want is one of these.
the ratcheting comealong, solid body housing/Cast metal and a strong enough handle to slip a piece of pipe over for leverage.
ive used these for over 30 years.
they want a hefty price for a new one, almost 300 bucks..
ps,fair warning,if you are looking at the vintage ones at a yard sale,or ebay or whatever,
do Not buy/use the Alum body ones for heavy use, they will shatter like an egg.

I bent the handle on my old come a long. Loading a car. So I upgraded to a 12000 lb harbor freight winch. Should have bought one years ago. Makes loading a car like it weighs nothing. But I still use the come a long for other lighter jobs. And it still never spools the cable evenly.

Also, the lower pic in post 7...some of those types have a nasty problem with breaking the internal pawl ring.

Make sure it works in both directions, under load.

Bought an electric winch over 30 years ago.....besides a sawzall it's the best tool purchase I've ever made!

Yep.

I had the HF "marine" winch that lasted almost 10 years stored outdoors, and now have the HF $50 winch, which has done well except for the junk wireless remote.
