Hello everyone, I have a firm feel ps chuck and the steering is hard to turn when the cars at idle or when pulling in and backing out, it feels great on the road once you're over 2 mph give or take, I tested it at a little over 1200 rpm's in park and it still was hard to turn. Has anyone had similar problems? I talked to Dick over @ firm feel and he said it may be the ps pump (new rebuild from napa) is to wimpy to support the chuck, short of sending the pump out for an upgrade are there any mopar high pressure pumps to be found? Thanks

The pump pully is probably too big. At idle, it is not turning the pump fast enough, until it is running at a higher RPM. I would look for a smaller diameter pully for it.

Thanks 69B That makes sense, do you have any suggestions on what pulley to use?

What pump do you have? Most can easily be shimmed up to raise the pressure.Volume is a diff story tho.

@bigblock its a saginaw pump canned ham style, I should good with the stock volume

Thanks Jeff, it seems to me the pump in the article was upgraded to where I'm at right now, my car feels absolutely great at road speed, no slop instant steering response but parking lot conditions its harder to turn than a rack & pinion, I'll call firm feel tomorrow again and ask a few more questions. BTW the tech guy @ FF said tranny fluid will increase pressure over reg steering fluid, in my case it wasnt enough

Sorry, but no. After 3 blown pumps, and countless hoses, I gave up and switched to a manual box. Worked great after that...

I've fixed all the leaking problems with the pumps and hoses, it was the domino effect, the new chuck, more pressure, blown hoses, defective pumps, each upgrade made some other weak link fail. not to mention adjusting the self steer was a pain. I really love the way the steering feels on the road to me it feels like a nice tight rack and pinion it just sucks at parking lot speeds. like arm wrestling a fat lady for a dougnut

I figured out what's making the steering hard at off idle...my torque converter is a high stall 3500 and the motor doesn't turn enough rpms for the ps pump to pressurize
