When I got my 69 charger it had a dinky little grant steering wheel in it and I really didn’t like the looks of it. Found a used wood grain wheel and bought it. I changed it but never did get the horn working after changing it. I know it works because when I was torquing it on, the socket was contacting something in there and beeping the horn.
So can someone give me a crash course on the horn button? Does the wheel perhaps need to be tightened more? Dirty contact?

That round black Thing is a spring loaded horn switch. It’s probably dirty or rusty inside. You don’t need to overtighen anything for it to work, just ground that wire and it honks.

Ok thanks. I’ll take it apart and clean it up and hopefully that’s all it is.

Still having no luck with the button. The horn works fine when I touch the wire to the wheel hub but pressing the button ain’t doing a thing. Is there any way to open this thing (in the picture) to clean it out? Or just hose it out with contact cleaner?

Sink it on vinegar or lemon juice overnight. Will remove the rust. Then on baking soda solution to eliminate the acids.

Most of those contact cleaners don't remove the rust, but just dust and grease. Vinegar or lemon juice will remove everything.

That’s a great tip. I’ll give that a try. Thanks Mr. Nacho!

maybe overnight is not even needed, maybe 4 or 6 hours could be enough. I have used this method couple of times and bulkhead terminals got clean in about 4 hours.

add some salt on vinegar also helps.

you can use some degreaser and brush before the vinegar/lemon juice just for better eficiency on the acid cleaning.
