How cold does it have to be before it cracks the block?

I assumed everyone runs antifreeze, even in warm climates...... for the corrosion protection at least

I can’t imagine what it would be like living in a place where you could get by without antifreeze. But I guess really, most places on the planet are like that.

I always just put cardboard panels under the car isolating the engine area. Then a folded up blue tarp on top of the engine that I tucked around it. I would put a small electric heater, like you would use under a desk. That combination kept my engine very snug and warm during the coldest weather.

Even though my stuff is parked in a heated shop during the winter, I still run a 50/50 mix of antifreeze. We have had ice storms knock out power a few times, no power means no heat, sometimes for an extended period of time. If that happens I don’t want to be screwing around draining coolant in the cold and dark.

Many years ago my GMC froze when I failed to check the coolant strength, it didn’t hurt the block but it did split a seam on the bottom tank of the radiator.

There's 2 different types of thermometers back there and 15 minutes ago they both were registering 30. One remembers the low and the high and so far the low has been 30
