How much free movement should I have in a drive shaft?

The rear axle is hanging down to its limit of travel. My shaft with the yoke bottomed out, leaves three-quarters of an inch approximately before the rear joint goes in the rear yoke. Seems a bit tight when the car sits on the ground. How much end play should I have?

Check it with the wheels on the ground. 3/4 to 1 inch would be the right amount of travel.

OK, with the help of a magic marker and checking the rear on the ground and on jack stands I have approximately an inch and a half.
