How to Find the Correct Sending Unit

Guys I need to purchase a new sending unit for my 68 Plymouth GTX gas tank and it looks like there is a couple out there for Plymouths. How do I find out the correct one for my car?

The only difference is the size of the fuel line... some R/B Hemi cars use the larger for higher flow but most common factory size is 5/16

Might want to climb under the car with 5/16 and 3/8 open ended box wrenches and see which one fits the fuel hard lines and hopefully the sending unit is the same size. Or climb under the fuel tank with the same wrenches and check sending unit outlet for size. Also, did the 68's come with return lines?

Just an FYI based on something I discovered this past weekend when dealing with my '69 Bee sending unit. My car has a return line so when I ordered a new sending unit I got the 2 line sending unit thinking the return line was part of the sending unit. As I removed the old sending unit I noticed it only had one outlet and the return line was plumbed straight into the fuel tank. Needless to say I had to order the single outlet sending unit and send the other one back. So before you order a new one you might want to double check the confirguration of the existing sending unit.

Keep the old one. If you find a new one that reads over 3/4 when full, let us know. Lots of threads on this.

Oh, not sure if you have it or not, but the "special" fuel sending unit wrench sure made it a snap getting that retaining ring off the unit.

Thanks 440, question: a sending unit on Brewers web page for a Plymouth B Body 68 for a 440 is $109. A sending unit from SumitRacing for same make and model is $40.

Any idea why there is such a big price difference?

Perhaps Brewer's is the Spectre Premium unit Made in Mexico, whereas the Summit unit is Made in China? $109 seems the typical price for sending units at the Mopar speciality shops.

Hey, I've got a brand new Spectre 67-68 unit thats a 3/8 single outlet unit if you're interested and if its what your car takes. I can't use it on my '69, different in-tank confirguation.

440 thought I would let you know they sent me the wrong sending unit, the one they sent me did not have the return line and mine does. Was looking at some of the older threads and looks like the same thing happened to you just the opposite, lol.

Well come to find out, I did need the sending unit with the return line built in. The prior owner used one of the vent lines as the return line. So I installed the correct 3/8 fuel unit w/return line, and had to bend my own vent line so now my gas tank has two vent tubes like its supposed to. My whole fuel system was jacked!!

5/16 single outlet sending unit into 3/8 fuel hard line back to a 5/16 rubber hose connected to the fuel pump. Then the 1/4 return line was originaly plumbed to the carb vent. I fixed that by installing the Wix fuel filter with return line built in.

AT least the prior owner used the 3/8 fuel line and saved me the trouble (even though I ordered a brand new one not knowing I already had a 3/8 line.).

Oh let me count the ways it was jacked. But its all fixed NOW!!!!! and working flawlessly!!! Finally got the car out yesterday after dicking with it for over a month fixing various issues after the new motor install.

3004182 is the 5/16.
If you have a 440 or Hemi you need the bigger one which is 3004180.
