I've done thousands of those over the years! With the advent of vinyl replacement windows, not so much anymore. Now it's replace the complete unit. Glass replacement is now another lost art, so to speak. ruffcut
Truth be told, when I was a little kid in the early 70's I broke a couple basement windows (the three pane type) just so I could go with my Dad to the hardware store and do the process.
Removing broken glass, scraping out the old putty, clean up and put the glass in and use those little tacks. Then the glazing, smoothing that putty, and presto good as new!
When I was young, I broke a window in the garage. Dad bought a larger sheet of glass, knowing that his son would be breaking many more windows. He would try to cut a piece and it would break, I would laugh and he would yell at me. When the sheet of glass was too small to cut (break) again. He sent me to the lumber yard and have them cut a piece to fit. I broke lots of windows after that and always bought the glass to fit after that.
The vinyls I just take to the glass shop. I can't cut double or triple pane and they request the frame to size the glass correctly.
Then there is the vacuum and gas filled.
Think I am done for fixing windows.
