How to replace the small spring that opens the hood

I need to figure out how to replace the spring that pops up the hood when you release the latch mechanism. I don't want to scratch the paint, naturally, and there seems no good way to insert the spring without winding it, which would let the bottom coil slip under its tab. Some of you must have done this before, so I would like to hear how. Thank you, guys.

They are loose once they go under the tab. I just twisted them in. Perhaps place some paper under it before and remove it after you twist it in.

Be very careful. That tab is not too sturdy and easy to break off. Ask me how i know.

the paint will chip you have to bend the tab oh well
