Hello
My name is Mike. I have owned several mopars over the years but I am new to this sight. Hence the title “I am new but old”.
I have built several cars over the years and knew a lot more years ago than I do now. My brain went numb building a 1979 trans am over the last 5 years. Yes you heard that right. I know some of you probably threw up a little bit if you drink a little milk that taste will go away.
Anyway I currently own 2 dodge chargers one is a misfit I got from a junk yard cost me $300 and not a number one matches. I was young put a lot of money in it and bondo got pieces from a 1971 super bee, some 1974 fenders and a lot of mismatched parts.
This summer I bought a pretty cool 1974 charger it’s a spring special.
They come in one color moonstone, they have champagne vynle tops, shag carpet, the interior is Aztec print, they only came with 318s and automatics. And one sport mirror. Definitely a 70s car.
I will be taking a few liberties with it during its build but trying to keep it close to natural as not to take away from its 70s coolness.
But I do have one question it says in the build sheet it has the optional 230hp 318. I have never heard of this. I wonder if it was just a cam swap or what made it have a higher horsepower than a standard 175/180 hp 318.
I will post progress n here and you tube if you want to follow along ..
I will start after the holidays.

Welcome from Mid-Michigan. Looks like a cool project, should make a really nice cruiser, and weekend fun car!

Welcome. Michael !! Enjoy your Mopars ! ( the 230 hp rating was the pre-smog rating on the 318 )
Thank you I do enjoy them. Only question would be why is it called out on the fender tag? 74 was an odd year. Do you know anything about the spring specials? Wonder what kind of hippie puts shag carpet and sway bars and a 318 in the same car

That is not the "Aztec" fabric I'm familiar with.

230 was the somewhat overly optimistic gross HP rating of the 318.
150 was the net rating (for single exhaust, 170 for dual on Charger Rallye), starting in 1972.

Welcome. Nice project and Trans Ams are still a cool car.
Thank you. Yeah it’s cool. It was my wife’s cousin’s car he died some time in the early 90s. His mom kept it in a garage for 30 some years. She was getting up in years and decided it was time to sell it I told her I would take care of it and park it right beside my dodge. It was a really nice old car. He curbed it so it needed a rocker and some paint but it fired right up and I’ve kept it as original as possible. Sorry about the photo iPad cameras suck
