:iamwithstupid: anyone know about that linkage rod that goes to the tranny? I have a 1972 I.H. Coachman RV. It has the IH 392cu, and a Mopar 727 stuffed in a IH case. Nice huh? So, it will not drive out in drive till I get her up to 20mph in first. Than SLAM drive...and away we go. I know That won't last long. Halp?
Go ahead...tell me where to go....everyone else does//LOL

^^^park it on a downhill and release e-brake??:icon_jokercolor:

I would highly suggest a Factory Service Manual for your specific year make & model, also there's a great book Torqueflite A-727 Transmission Handbook written by Carl Munroe HPBooks-1399... The part that the mechanical linkage actuates is a Throttle/Transmission Kick Down Linkage &/or Throttle Position Valve, Actuation Linkage, on the top/front above & forward of the trans shifter linkage, it has to be on & adjusted properly or the trans will fry very soon, there is also aftermarket cable linkages from a Company like Lokar, try Summit Racing or other parts source, if you go that route... Good luck

How do you get it going to 20mph without having any forward gear?

I think what he is saying is he has to manually put it in low gear. Otherwise, it will not start out in first gear with the shifter in drive. Or it does not start at all. Whats the fluid look like? Could be in the valve body, or the over running clutch maybe? Definitely check all the basics. Fluid level and condition. Linkage adjustments.

727 Coachman IH RV

Do you have the linkage rod or is it missing?
Hey! thanks for all the tried replies..OK. so...it appears I need to clarify a few things. To recap, it's 72 Coachman Rv with a 727 tranny in a IH case powered by a 392 V-8 (IH) To get this behemoth rolling, I shift to first, roll out, get her up to a decent speed like 20MPH a little less when warm and shift second. Nice firm shift. then once rolling well, up to third gear. again a nice firm shift, no slip, no clunk. rides out well.
I just cannot place it in DRIVE and start out. I do have to down shift because if I stop while in third, it seems to not want to get rolling agian. VERY weird, I have rebuild T-350 and MANY standard trannies. it's all nuts and bolts. right? so, what gives, never did a Band adjustment tranny, but the exploded view appears to be a strong trans, seen them at the drags even, thanks to everyone who knows a little about this stuff.

park.....first.....second....then drive, same for the slow downs,,,, gets old fast! the guy I bought the RV from SWEARS it's the original transmission...but what factory uses a yellow marker on the case??? LOL.
it did get a trans cooler, and a bottle of magic fix, the "good" stuff from Lucas. better, but will not start out in drive still. and I would love to come to a light without having to down shift and then upshift!
THANK YOU

and rusty drum brakes!!
stops surprisingly well
surprisingly!

As suggested by Hemi-Rebel, it's almost certainly the over-running sprag. It's not holding the rear drum from turning as it should. Placing the selector in '1' also engages the rear band, something that isn't applied when left in drive. This locks the clutch drum so it's stationary, allowing the power flow to the tailshaft as it's supposed to.
