Ok first of I'm running a 318,with a 290 duration, 484 lift. 1.60/2.02 valves, edlebrock intake and 4 barrel with headers. Probably around 250-275,hp. I have an 8 1/4 rear end with with 2:76 or 2:91 gears. I have a guy sending me a Set of 3:91 with install kit for like $130,shipped. Brand new. I think the gears will be fine and wake up the car. Its going to be a weekend driver most likely. I keep having people trying to talk me out of it. Saying its too tall of a gear, had milage is gonna suck, but my thoughts are I'm gonna stroke the 318or run a 340/360,built later and I'll already be set. I know your gonna say I'm wasting my time with 8 1/4,to get a 8 3/4. Well send me one. I can't afford one. Too much for this guy. For now I have to use what I can afford regardless how strong. Thank you guys

IMHO I would go with 3:55 gears your mpg won't suffer as bad but you still have a tall enough gear to get you off the line pretty good ! And your 8¼ will be fine behind a small block you shouldn't have any problems their !!:imho::imho:

I run 391's with 27 inch tall tires....3200 at 65...If not happy with 391's you can go to a taller tire..had 410's with 29 inch tall tires and ran 65 at 3000.

Is it a sure-grip ? Why not get one from a boneyard ?

These gears were practically given to me alomgnwith install kit.. All brand new. I'm not really worried.about gas as most times it won't see more than 50 mph. Around here bone yards are thin with dodge. I may eventually find one cheap enough but for now I will stick with the 8 1/4.,I recently fell 20' at work and I was our only income so I have to take what I can get at a cheap price. I have been blessed with some mopar guys helping me out it parts.

what body style is the car? if the cam really has 290 degrees of seat timing that would concern me with a small engine and big car.

3.55 are a great all around gear... but ! 3.90's are more fun !... kind of like Blondes

Stick them in give it a good romp if you like them leave them in if you don't pull them out and sell them off ,I think you'll like them just fine . I have 3.55's in my charger and now there ok but after the 4 speed gets installed I'll probably go for the 3.91 gears ,it will make things a bit more interesting , the guy who built my 340 stuck the biggest cam he could find and put a 2800 stall it was just a all around fail cams to big for the auto and the gears don't do it justice, good luck and if you need an 8 3/4 let me know might be able to find you something cheap you'll just need to take a trip to fl. Let us know how it go's

I have a similar setup, 318, 214/224 @.050, headers, heads worked, single plane 4 barrel with a mild stall. I had 3.55's and am installing 3.91's at the moment in preparation for a big block swap, I will probably be done next week. The 3.55's are a big step up from the 2.76's you probably have but are busy on the highway with 27" tires. I will let you know what the 3.91's are like. Depends on what you think you want, but at least you can get the facts. Under 50mph, you will probably be fine.

Braggin about mileage is what old men do. People who ain't dead yet giggle like 9 years olds after ripping off 2 stripes of solid rubber through the neighborhood.Run the 390. Will probably need a looser convertor to make it run right but can do it later. 8 1/4 will live. U joints are cheap.

Two solid strips in the neighborhood definitely will not impress your neighbors. Certainly not those with kids playing in the street. Just what makes you think us old guys do not like to go fast and gas mileage is our only goal. You must be new here. As far as rear end gears use want ever your car and you can live with. Want to go fast for a short distance or a long one? I think gum ball rally.

Wow impressive sense of humour Mr. Responsible. Not new but most definitely not YOU. Easily offended people should stick to Facebook and other social sites ....
