I am putting a new speedometer cable on my 68 satty. How the heck do I get the new cable thru the rubber grommet? If it was a new grommet would it be pliable enough to stretch over the cable end? Do I need a new one or is there a trick? All my years of rodding I have never had to replace a speedy cable....Be easy on me guys..

No question is stupid. Having that said, have you tried wd-40? Or some other lubricant?

Naw. It was the last thing I was working on for the night. I figured I would ask. I am tired and sore. Been loving on this car all day, thought I might be missing something.....I will try that, or buy a new grommet this thing is hard as a rock. I am going to wrestle it again tomorrow. Thanks for the reply. I new if I said idiot question it would get a reply quick.

Thats one way to get help.

So you have a stiff grommet, huh? :rolling:

OK, seriously, heat it up with a heat gun to soften it. I did this with the parking brake cable grommet.

I started to say my grommet is stiff in the morning and softens as the day progresses.....

but I thought better of it

Seems I'm thinking that grommet has a metal piece in it. (been a while) If all else fails you might try cutting one side of the grommet, slip it over the cable, then use some of that vulcanizing stuff for fixing a flat to "glue" it back together

I have no glue what a satty is, but if its a Satellite , opn at least 10 B body cars I've split on side of the grommet, and slipped it on, then I used 3M black weather stripping cement to glut the joint back together. WD40 realy works to get it back into the firewall.

I totally understand thanks for the help Patrick......

If you heat it with a hair dryer, then spray it liberally with "Armor All" or "Son of a Gun", you should slip right through, or even be able to remove the grommet........if you get it out, soak it with the treatment for a day or more and it will come back to life.

I have boiled them in water to get them soft. Slips over with ease when hot.

When was it ever not cool to have a mopar?

In the Chevy dominated neighborhood where I grew up, bringing home a 68 RR in 1982 went over like a led zeppelin. Boy did I get years of crap for having the "big heavy boat". Seems like everywhere I went in town I got the same reception. Slo-par. MoPar no go far, etc....The crap stopped when I took my Camaro buddy for a ride to the store one day. All I saw out of the corner of my eye was his arms flying to reach for anything he could hold on to.

And yes, I still have that car

Yep, It's the Real Deal, It's F8 , and it's also in need of a complete restoration, which is in the process as we speak, but it's gonna be a slow go , hope to have it finished by Jan.2011 , I will post some "Car ****" for you guys soon.
