I am a very new member to the mopar club/owners. I'm 17 years old. I just recently purchased my first car, a 4 door hard top
1964 dodge polara golden anniversary edition in great condition. I know little to nothing about cars and I'm trying to learn. I catch on quickly and could just use any advice on what I should replace, fix, and do to get my car running and to preserve it as long as possible. I don't plan on selling it, I want to work on it. Right now I'll just need brake lines, new tires, rims and a battery to get her back to life. I will probably have to empty the gas tank as it had been sitting for a few years before I bought it. Is there any advice you guys have for a young guy and his mopar?

sorry i posted this at almost 3am and went to bed. Never expected so much feedback! just give me one minute to post pictures.

Hi Justin,

Welcome to the forum. There are plenty of guys here to help so ask away. Can you post up some pictures of your ride?

Hey Justin, welcome to Mopar University. What you don't know y ou can find out a lot of it on this site. Working on cars is very rewarding and can be frustrating a at the same time. Take it slow - which I'm sure your pocket book will be in charge of. You might want to buy a battery first just to see if the car runs and how it runs. Next steps will be dependent on what you have there. You can't drive a car that doesn't run.....

We all started somewhere and there are a lot of very smart people on this site that will help you along. Keep posting on the site and asking what. You don't know. We want to hear from you!

Welcome bud may I ask how old are you I just turned 21 nice to see some young guns.

Buy a factory service manual and get some friends who know how to work on cars:3gears:

Welcome!

Welcome Justin. X2 on the factory service manual also try to find a local Mopar club or old car club to join and you will find many people willing to help you. Good luck.

Welcome Justin!

Sounds like you have a pretty darn cool car to start out with. Like others have said, we love our pictures so we'd love to see a few of yours.

If the car has been sitting awhile, expect to see some issues with the fuel system. If you can, I would certainly drain out the tank and see what it looks like in there. As an example, my car had been sitting for 17 years. I figured if I put fresh fuel in it and double fuel filters I would be OK. I put one filter before the fuel pump and one after. Well, my tank had a fine "silt" in it that not only clogged my filters but also clogged up my carburetor too. It ran for awhile, but I paid for it with more work later. So I suggest you check some of that out first before you do too much.

As others have also said, post away with questions! We are happy to help and happy to have you as a member of the forum.

As stated above - welcome to the madness - ( or is it sickness ) - you've come to the right spot !

That's a pretty cool car to have as your first - nice job !

Post up some pictures before the "natives" start getting restless ! ! !

If you got a question, post a picture if you can, ask your question - you'll get plenty of responses as there are a LOT of good people here willing to offer advice.

Let's see the car......

Howdy. You should get a repair manual. They are about $25 on CD or $45 in book form.

Brake lines can be had here: http://www.inlinetube.com/

Get a color coded wiring schematic like these http://www.classicindustries.com/sh...dia/literature/wiring-diagrams/?p=1&sb=2&r=30

Rock Auto has a lot of parts for your car as well as local parts stores like NAPA, etc.

Welcome to the site.
Would love to see some pictures.
Things I do to cars that have been sitting for a long time before I drive them is .
Battery ,rebuild carb, drop and clean fuel tank, replace the sock on the fuel pump pick up,replace the fuel filter, tune up( oil change plugs and wires)the plugs and wires can wait a bit if funding is tight.also go over the brake system lube the brake pad slides(calipers) check and replace any bad lines, then check the master , then of course tires these are all very important in getting your car on the road safely.

There's tons more things I would recommend doing but for now start with those and see how it runs and drives

Justin,

Your car looks to be in really good shape - nice score!

Bb70charger500 has some great suggestions - I would try as many of those as you can and have money for. Start a project thread and we'll be glad to help you get through it.

Good Luck!
