Here is the situation.

In germany i have to deal with "TÜV" which is an inspection you have to pass to legally drive your car on the street.
You have to do some conversions and upgrades to pass.
Its lots of rules and paper work and all in all you got better chances to pass when getting it done by a shop as they seem to think all private individuals only do foolish work.
Thats why i decided to let the shop perform the neccessary work and getting it passed.

Well one thing you need to have are hazard lights.
Otherwise you wont pass the inspection.

What the shop did is simply drilling holes on the underside of the dash and installing a switch.
Well so far so good, this is one option to do it.

BUT they did not ask me if i am okay with drilling a hole in my 50000$ cars dashboard?
I mean its not the end of the world but i would have choosen a less destructive way like buying a second set of steering colum covers
and drilling a hole there, keeping the originals.

I think you cannot get excited drilling holes in dashboards worth thousands of $$$ without asking first?

Am i overreacting or right to be mad?

Id be livid . like dude what the firetruck are you people thinking?

I would be mad as most dashes have factory holes on the bottom lip to mount a switch...

I wouldn't be real happy either. I watched an employee at a local shop drill straight through a vin plate on someones dash for a roll cage install, i was pissed and it wasn't even my car. Guy thought it was funny.

I've had to weld up a couple 71 72 charger dashes , where, at one point someone decided it was a good idea to drill 1/2" holes between the bezel and glove box door and mount push button start switches and whatever else.

Well they did not say they drilled a hole.
I assumed that because i did not knew there are factory holes. I hope they used them.
Will find that out when i'm in the shop again.

Otherwise i will tell them im upset and they better not do something like this ever again.

Thanks for confirmation that im not overreacting if they really drilled holes. :)

Hopefully that's the case... Keep us posted..

Any shop that knows what they're doing...especially on a vintage/cherry car should FIRST ask the owner before they do any invasive work. They should explain what they want to do FIRST. This allows you the conversation about possible options FIRST. There are too many shops that have no interest in doing the job carefully-thoughtfully because (1) profit = in & out fast and (2) they're not working on THEIR ride...it's somebody else's. I've spent more time fixing **** ups thus always prefer to do it myself unless I'm not equipped to handle it...

I would be pissed! Hopefully they used an existing hole.

is it a shop at the port?

No its a shop near where i live.
My dad already had our oldsmobile maintained by them in the last years. Its the first time i have to deal with them though.

Anyway if or if not they drilled holes.
I will tell them from now on they are not allowed to do any irreversible work without me approving it first.

I could write a book about highly recommended shops that did shitty work, not because they didn't know what they were doing; but their time and profit...okay, aside from also not knowing what they were doing or giving a ****. In some cases, I have to believe that happy customers just didn't know or take notice of **** shortcuts as they still hang onto their lofty reputations. Two, check that, actually three shops come to mind through my years restoing cars that required me to spend more time reworking their crap work than doing it myself. I'm pretty **** though...I'll take all day on some fix that a shop would do in an hour.

Well given the impressions i had with them so far (not only this) i doubt i will take my car to them again.
But i think they cant screw up with changing the oil and filter, given i already hooked them up with the oil and filter that i want them to use. :D

Why couldn't they just replace or repair the original hazard light setup?

Yes, controlled with the flasher rocker switch.

So i simply turn that flasher switch on and the lights blink? (hazard light)

Okay the car will pass inspection in the next few days and until then they wont do any further work (because they are waiting for parts).
After the car passed i will get it out of this morons place!
