My shift box (68 charger shifter), has enormous throw/play. It was adjusted (the shift rods, alignment etc). But have heard the shift box and rods from a 1970 is much shorter throw? Or is there an aftermarket that does the same?

I put a 70 hurst shifter mechanism in my 69.
The linkage below the shifter pivot is 1" longer to create a shorter throw. I also modified a shifter mechanism by cutting the levers and welded in some metal to lengthen them 1" longer for my van. Its still holding up without any problems so far. The hurst levers are of a harder carbon steel
So they last longer. I would prefer to have the oem 70 mechanism. But they are pricey.

I believe if you use the 70 ONLY shifter mechanism you need to change the reverse rod to a 70 if I remember correctly..

Is the 70 shift box the only year which be better? And does it have to be from a 70 B body?

The shifter is likely the same - probably even the same as any GM or Ford if they used a Hurst! The rods likely differ

Ok, ive heard the 70 shift box had longer fingers, was wondering if that was the only year and model having those

Side by side comparison of the 68/9 lever length on the left vs. 70 B on the right. We have new 70 B body shifters available. 1970 B-BODY COMP PLUS HURST SHIFTER MECHANISM 7174 REVERSE, NEW - Mopar A833 4-Speed Transmission & Component Specialists 70 Shifter requires the 70 shifter rods also. Levers and mounting plate remain the same.

Thanks Dan. So is it all three shift rods that are different then? I thought you could adjust 2 and the reverse rod was totally different. Or are the size of the holes in the mechanism needed the reason. I can’t remember… Thanks again for the info..

The 70 shifter box will shorten the throws, but your handle might not fit. The 70 box from Brewer's takes a bolt on handle. If your handle doesn't fit you might be able to modify it, or you could buy a new handle. Hurst makes an assortment of bolt on handles.

The only issues I've ever had with poorly shifting Hurst boxes were ones that were worn slap out.

Has the OP tried a rebuild?

Compared to a muncie shifter, a new process shifter in good condition feels smooth as silk, with more positive engagement.

I have a pistol grip 2-bolt style shift handle

I did not want to waste money on a rebuild since it would not shorten the throw as much as a 70 shift box

If your pistol grip is a 70 B body one, then you definately need the 70 mechanism. As has been noted, the 70 handle is real long.

All i know is its a “replica “ pistol grip shift handle

I too have heard the only change needed was the reverse rod?

Yes. The 1/2 and 3/4 rods are about 0.75" longer...sometimes you can make the 69 and older rods work...sometimes there aren't enough threads screwed into the adjuster button. In our linkage rod kits we make the 1/2 and 3/4 rods the 70 length and just thread them further so they work for both applications. Stock rods aren't done that way.
