is it o.k. to sandblast the motor compartment EX : firewall , frame rails , inner fenders , rad support & under carrige ? i know body panels are bad to blast because they will warp but os the above fine to blast ? im using BLACK BEAUTY 80 grit wit around 80 - 120 lbs of air . mostly 80 pounds .

I am getting to this stage myself. What method do you recommend?
 
Blasting is ok, but use media like plastic or walnut hulls.
 
if its not too bad and you dont work any one area too much i dont think it will hurt . not the preffered method but take your time and dont get the panel too hot it will work.ive blasted a couple 4x4 like this thru the years. just use a high build primer. frame rails and suspension are no problem
 
This is an engine compartment that was sand blasted with a mixture of worn glass beads and whatever sand I could throw in. As long as it would pass through the hose it went in the bucket. And when the bucket was empty I just swept it up, strained it through a screen and hit it again. No sanding or prepping of the bare metal prior to epoxy primer coat (other than a good wash).

20-something years ago on my 68 RR I used a 3500 PSI pressure washer with a sand attachment and water blasted it off. If you ask me this is by far the best method. The old paint comes off so fast you think you are painting it silver and the sand was the cheapest thing I could find, kind of like playground sand. Paint went on fine and looked great on both cars.

I blasted mine with the black fine grit .just didnt stay in one place to long and used lower pressure, turned out fine ,but I was planing to replace the inner fenders anyway

One guy mentioned a sand blaster attachment for a pressure washer. That is a great idea. It will keep the engine bay cool and keep the surface clean and control the dangerous dust from blasting. I can not remember who sells that pressure washer attachment, I wish i had one. Right after you wash the interior of the engine compartment spray it immediately with a Zinc Phosphate coating and dry the body with a leaf blower and "dry " compressor air. if you need to media blast any rusted areas get Dupont Star Blast XL about 8.00 per bag "50 lbs from a local distributor, this blast media used on a very slight angle does not warp body panels if you keep the pressure low and use a pressurized blaster.

Yeah, I forgot to mention about the flash rust, so like you said, some metal prep or something. Leaf blower...That's brilliant!!
 
i dont see why not. my old man had his whole 70 gtx sand blasted along with some sheet metal work done

Well, sand as a media is not good. First off it releases so much free silica which fooks you up! Most media blasters using sand as a media have no breathing apparatus to breath clean and filtered/fresh and cool air. Secondly each grain of sand is not angular and thus not good for cutting the material off -- it works, but, it's not as 'sharp'. Thirdly you run very high pressures in sand blasting, usually around 80+ PSI which really will and does tear up the metal underneath; it can take off more than needed.

Media Blasting with a good air source like a 50+ HP screw compressor will generate 200 cfm at any air pressure you want up to around 100 psi. However, I use about 20 PSI blowing soft material (Plastic granules) on our cars. Pick your poison, sometimes it works well on the cheaper route; sandblasting, sometimes it doesn't.
