Hey guys, i've been looking around to upgrade the rear in my '74 satellite and i found a almost complete '71-'74 b-body 8-3/4, minus the drums for $400 obo. Open rear (non posi) and 3.23 gears. Then i found a center section with a suregrip and 3.91 gears for $500 obo. So for about $900-$1000 bucks i could have a awsome rear in my ride. Is that to much? Any help would be great, It seems hard to find these things around here.
Thanks, Jason

That's a bit pricey on the housing. i'd say $150-200 tops.

About right on the 3.91 SG chunk.

Look at C body axles, almost same size and much cheaper.

When I have the 71/4B rears I get 250.00 for the housing and axles. Got that for my last 4 or 5. Hardest rear to find next to the A-body. Diffs are 75-150 for open carriers. Carriers with S/G go for 350-500
The 71/4B rears are the same except the holes on the perches for the centering pin is larger on the 73/4 units.

That's a bit high for B body stuff.

Well as I said the 71/4B's are kinda hard to find. I sell all the 62-70B rears for 150.00 housing and axles. Same with trucks. How many do you need? Meanwhile I have 4 people waiting for the 71/4 units.

400 for the setup with open carrier is kinda high.

Also on the Sure Grippers, the 489 case came with the cone style S/G and no rebuild kits are available for it. Can do a one time rebuild with machine work and shims. The 741 and 742 units came with the clutch style S/G and kits are available. The clutch S/G can be used in the 489 case. The thing about buying a used 489 S/G is that you don't know it's condition and if the one time rebuild has already been done. 741/2 S/G can be built over and over as long has the hard parts aren't worn.

I'm just looking for one complete set up but hard to find, thanks guys

moparmarks, do you ship if you get one in?

Yup, you're right about that. I like to see them opened before I buy them. Both units can be trashed if people keep running them as if they were an open rear once they quit biting....

Like the 489 in my 72SSP. It ain't grippin no more.

moparmarks is about right on prices, and he's also right about the pin... unless you're considering eliminating the iso-comp rubber.

No i wasn't really thinking of eliminating anything, i was hopeing for a unit to just bolt right in without needing to change anything. I talked with the guy selling the complete rear minus the drums, it is an open rear with 3.23's and a 489 casting. I think he said it was out of a '73 and he'd go down to $350. I know it may seem high but im considering it due to the fact because it should fit right in. Then i'll just need to replace the center chunk or get some gears and a S/G. So if i understand this right, can i put a clutch style S/G in the 489 case and be able to rebuild it over and over, its just the cone style that no kits are around anymore? Or just the 489's with either style S/G can only be rebuilt once?

moparmarks do you happen to have any complete 73/74 b-body 8-3/4's on hand now that your willing to sell?

They are also on Ebay. I bought my rear drums from them, great people, lots of parts!

Thanks moparparts but i picked up the 8 3/4 not to long ago from the guy i mentioned above, he lived about 2.5 - 3 hrs away. I was able to get it for $275 and just today i picked up a Yukon power-lock posi from Randy's ring and pinion and a master rebuild kit for the rear from classic industries. Thankyou for the offer.
