It's Tail Light Tuesday Whatchya Got?

Funny thing, I had some supposedly highly rated LED bulbs in my Challenger... Till someone commented about how dim they had become.... I was oblivious since I never see my own tail lights.. I figured I've got really good LED bulbs, my lights should be easily visible.... Not the case....Apparently it's pretty common for LED's to dim as they age... Nobody talks about it...

I’ll have to check mine. I did the back to back in the dark garage and saw the gain. I’ve seen them against stuff pulling back in late, but I wouldn’t be able to tell if they were dimmer than they had been by just that. I use Yorkim brand off Amazon.

As Greg mentioned earlier, it was how dim they were during the day that was scary.... At night they have stronger contrast, so while they may not be as bright as you remember them being they still are lighting up... It the daylight mine were practically invisible...

I should have bought that when I looked at it for sale back around 1995 but since the trunk floor and rear shock cross member was cut out, I passed since I didn't know how to fix it then. But back then cars were thought to be to be to far gone if the floors or roof was rotted out.
I replaced the shock mount and the end of the drivers side frame rail. My friend sent it to a shop and after getting a huge quote to do a full restoration,he ended up trading the car for a turn key 70 Challenger R/T V code 440 Sixpack 4 speed matching numbers, one repaint survivor car. The guy who owns the car now is going to do the restoration himself.

I don't know if I can pull that one off,it's my daughters birthday. The convertible was a teal green not often seen on e body cars.

In California we were passing on cars that had signs of bubbles behind the rear wheel...Why buy rotted junk when there's a better car across the street? LOL

I had people telling me I was nuts when I dragged this one home in 95....

So, a tricky thing Chrysler designed into the 68 Coronet tail lights... When the parking lights or brake lights are on but the car is not in reverse all three segments of the tail light glow red, you can see the bulb in the center segment.... But, when you put the car in reverse...

The inboard segments light up bright white and the outboard segments glow red.... The park/brake lights are not on..

And with all the bulbs off you can see the white inner segments...

That’s pretty cool! For those of us who are unfamiliar with this function, can you show us how the bulbs are arranged in the housing to achieve this?

What they did is use a transparent red divider wall between the park/brake/turn section & the back up lights... So if the brake/park/turn light is on it passes through the red divider ad the back up section glows red... When you're in reverse the back up bulb lights up the reverse light section bright white but also lights the park/brake/turn section which glows red... Just a simple red divider wall...
