It's trim time....

Finally it's time to start re-installing the side trim on my '64 Polara. I'm too cheap to spend $200 for a bunch of plastic hangers for the 1 1/2" wide trim so I need to come up with an alternative. Any suggestions?

I didn't have any clips for the hood trim and found these on ebay. There's many aftermarket or even original type repros that can work. Just measure the width of your trim and search for what will work. Some are threaded, some are push in. Nobody will see them when installed.

I would like to know the specifics on your rear wheel/tire combo. Are those the standard Ramcharger wheels, or a different backspace?

The fronts are original 15" x 5 1/2" Mopar wheels with 215/70 R15s. The rears are 15" x 8" reproduction wheels with 4 1/2" back spacing running 275/60 R15s.

I got a quote from Joe Suchy $150 for the set. I don't want to pay that either, but loose trim sucks.

You are in the wrong car mkt if 150 stops you from hanging correct trim. Then fill the holes and make the car a 330 model.
Heaven help you if you needed buy any trim and polish it.

Spending $150 for $3.00 worth of plastic is not something anyone with half a brain would do if there is a better option. I know the law of supply and demand sets the price but when that price is ridiculous, anyone with common sense will look for an acceptable alternative, they don't just blindly fork over the cash. My original post simply asked if anyone else had alternative ideas or had done it a different way.

Oh, and by the way.... I do my own work and I straighten and polish trim when it needs it. And one more thing... I spent $200 on the front hood trim piece. Why? Because there was no alternative.

I know the pain of finding clips as I ran into the same thing finding ones for my wife's 65 Satellite. Some I found on a 63 Fury, others I had to buy a parts car for and some I didn't have all of we did every other one. How many does that car take as I might have a few but I see a lot of holes? Is it just the plastic ones you are missing? And nice job on straightening and polishing.

There have been a lot of advances in the methods and materials used for hanging trim in the last 55 or so years. I'm still exploring possible options but if none of them pan out I'll probably just bite the bullet and buy a complete set of hangers. I don't only need the plastic ones I also need the narrow metal pieces for the 1/2" trim. Thanks for the complement on the trim. Takes a while but patience usually wins out over brute force. ;-)

I was looking for clips for the quarter panel trim on my 62 savoy, and a friend suggested Napa. I went to the local Napa and the had a substantial selection of trim clips on a rack in the middle of the store, so I didn't have to try to find something in a book or on a computer.
I found something that would work with a little modification, something any car guy could handle. Metal clips, retaining nut on the back, eight clips for around five bucks, if memory serves. Could have been five clips for eight bucks, either way a bargain.

I agree but.... Since I don't have a pile of cash to re-chrome the bumpers, especially since the rear one needs a bunch of work, I'm going to paint the bumpers bright silver metallic. That color is almost a dead ringer for the color of the current grill so the color will carry over and tie in. Similar to the bumpers on this car. It's not mine, but whoever built this one has really good taste.
