I had to make a correction to the original post to the question, in post #6.
I finally found the picture in the magazine archives, after all these years of random searches here and there for that particular car.
The car was IN the magazine, but not on the cover as I had initially thought.
And indeed, the article was published in the early to mid-80's, just as I recalled.
