Junkyards

40 =- years ago I would take a battery, cheep oil, can of gas and a few tools and go fire up a few engines. Until I found one that sounded good and didnt smoke. Pull it and for a couple hundred I would have a big block to replace the one I tore up.

There is a great yard north of me, I like to go there sometimes to clear my head. I have yet to purchase anything yet, but I think I might buy a hood for my Satellite so I can put a scoop on it

I picked this out of a yard in P.A. this winter.
I paid 35 bucks for it.
I was offered 500 for it but I like it too much.

I used to all the time.

There are none around here in Savannah that have old cars. Let me know if there are any!

I know of a few 50's models. The yard I frequent
the most is aptly named a junk yard. He has an on
site crusher and anything steel goes in it. But
he's got a lot of vehicles. He's a Mopar fan so
he's got a few collected. I'll take some pics
and attach to this thread when I can get back
there.

Yep, any of them around these parts have been crushed out of the old stuff - and in the case of
some of the local ones, they've gotten in trouble with the state over taxes and can't sell to the
public anymore, either.
I do miss the days 40-50 years ago when a fella could wander around one and pluck "goodies".
That is sad. Out here, the self serve yards seem to thrive. I've been to several over the past few weeks and even bought an axle for my truck. Classics still show up sometimes but that is getting rare to see.

Another thing. The recyclables commodity market is up right now...WAY up. So if you've had your eye on something "stashed away" at your local yard there's a greater-than-usual chance it's going to be crushed and sold for scrap very soon. Now's the time to get it!
Same thing happened in 2009-2010ish. Scrap metal prices got up through the roof and whamo! Most of the pre-80 cars in the yards around here vanished, and there were still quite a few back then. I remember a yellow '72 Roadrunner 400 at the pick-n-pull that disappeared before I could scuttle it..along with a handful of other cool stuff.

So, what is steel scrap right now?

Last I heard via a member here about 2 months ago was less than $3 per hundred pounds IIRC.

That's pitiful LOW.
