Hey guys, I have a leak on my 727 transmission around where the shift-shaft enters the transmission body. Its a pretty bad leak so I have to take care of it asap so I can get the car back to the body man.

The shaft enters the transmission vertically so I can't see much of what needs to happen. I am guessing there is just a seal there that can be replaced after removing the linkage? If so, how do you get it out and how do you get the new one in. Very little room to work there.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The seal is a no brainer but sometimes the friction discs wear and slip and when they do the friction generates heat. In turn the heat expands the volume of the fluid and when torque flites get overheated or overfilled they weep fluid out the front and you get fluid coming out the inspection cover. If your transmission is in good shape and not overfilled or overheating (sometimes due to lack of a transmission cooler) replace the seal with a full front pump seal kit. It will have all the necessary parts to do the job right.

Couple ways you can do it......

From the top or from the bottom. Neither require the tranny to be dropped.

Here's the "how to" from the FSM (requires dropping the pan):

There's also a tool made to pull the seal from the top, without having to drop the pan:

Some are able to fish the seal out with a pic style or small screwdriver, and then drive the new seal in with a 15/16" socket.....But be careful not to scratch or damage the shaft. Be aware there is two seals. An outer larger seal (which is typically the culprit) and a smaller kickdown inner seal.

Example of seals:

good luck....

There are 2 seals. One is shift selector shaft to trans case. The other is between the shift shaft and the throttle pressure shaft.

I went ahead and dropped the valve body out . I needed to check the condition of the filter anyway so just went for it. Got booth seals replaced without a whole lot of trouble.
Thanks guys for your replies!
