Hi All,
When ever I fill up my 66 Belvedere, gas leaks out onto the body. I want to stop this before I paint the car. Any suggestions?

Usually that happens because the vent is stopped up or not adequate enough to handle the speed of your fillup.

As RustyRatRod says, "...the speed of your fillup." With all the bends in the filler tube going to the tank (like a snake crawling up a picnic table), it is easy to get a backup if you pump it too fast. I have slowed the fuel flow down when filling mine. Takes longer but let messy...And I listen for the 'gurgle' as it approaches, so as not to spill over. Still happens on occasion. It's just a design flaw.

My tank (69 belvedere) has 2 vents in the tank plus another vent/return line in the sending unit and has a non-vented fuel cap due to the cap being so low and toward the rear of the car (behind the license plate). I have no idea if your tank is vented or not, but if so, make sure all the vents are in fact connected and unobstructed. 2 of my vents are plugged off but it doesnt affect me too much.

is it while your filling up or after ward when your driving around? i always run gas down the side of my dart while filling it up, did on my 67 belvedere also. like said, the pumps just fill so fast for them old cars. i keep spary wax and a rag in the car for just such an occasion.

Hi All, it only happens during the fill up. Thanks for the suggestions. Wow it may not cost any money to fix, only patience! I will try that. Thanks!
