When I first moved to San Diego circa 2001, I lived in a (20-foot) class 3 motor home for about six months. When I later rented an apartment for about the same amount I was paying for a space at an RV park, I sold it.
Then, between jobs (around 2002), I spent a month living in my daily driver '85 Dodge Caravan Cargo van (two front bucket seats and then cargo space behind). I took care of the three essential S's at a local 24 Hour Fitness Club. I spent evenings in the Border Books cafe in the downtown area.
At night, I parked on a short downtown overpass that crossed above Highway 5. In that location I obviously was never parked in front of a business or residence so I would be sure not to bother anyone. However, the first and only time I forgot to lock the sliding rear side door someone slid it open around two or three in the morning when I was sound asleep. The dome light came on, of course, the guy took one look at me, and continued on his way. Who knows what his intentions were?
Before this brief period of unemployment, I had resisted acquiring a cell phone. But then I had no choice because without one, how could a prospective employer contact me? Soon found employment and rented again (now downgraded to a one-bedroom, previously a three-bedroom).
