I have a six quart oil pan on a 383 with headers and high volume oil pump. I’m changing the oil and only 3.5 quarts came out, including most of what was in the filter. I filled the new filter part way before installing (1/3 quart), then put five quarts of oil into the engine. I ran it a few minutes and checked the dipstick - it indicates about 1/8” over “full”? Shouldn’t it need another quart? The Lokar is correctly installed into the block. Oil filter is Napa Gold 1515.

Ignore the stick reading. Put the 6 quarts in it and mark where the level is.

But the dipstick goes into the block - shouldn’t it read correctly regardless the capacity of the pan?

You would think so.
Bottom line is you want 6 quarts in there so when you fill it and run it once wherever it shows up on the stick on a level surface is the desired fill level.
