Long tube headers and my hammer

Drivers side in, putting in the starter in at the same time was a PITA. It was a 1 person job but could be easier with 2. Passenger side slipped right in. Need to adjust the trans dipstick tube as it’s touching. Any ideas how to move the trans dipstick tube? Just brute force maybe???

I am working on a friends 70 383 4 speed Road Runner. It has headers on it & the clear everything, no denting the tubes. Kind of a P.I.T.A. to work on, but fit is very good. I believe they are "Hedman Hedders" made for Mopar Performance, & they are NOT small tubes, maybe 1 7/8". Car ran mid to high 11s with this combo. Have to remove the left header to take the factory starter out though.
440 in my '68 GTX came with Hedmans as well. They've gotten the 5lb hammer "adjustment" around the starter
because there was no way in hell to get the stock starter on - and they even pinched the "Dakota starter".
Some judicious whacks with the hammer and they fit fine now.
You're right, these are big tube headers and certainly overkill for a mild build engine, but they're built
like tanks and don't leak, so...

Hey guys this is my second set of long tube headers that I’ve ordered from Summit. These are hooker comps pictured. The first set I got where are the Summit namebrand and they put the collector dead center of where the torsion bar is supposed to reside. Now I’m looking at severely beating the tubing to get the torsion to pass through. Is this right? Do you guys have to beat the **** out of the tubing to make the torsion fit?View attachment 1183734

My headers were about 1/8"-1/4" away from the torsion bar. So, I marked it where it needed a little more room with like a Sharpie. Then I took a large socket, held it up to the tube, and gave it a good whack. Done

Put a set of Wrapped Long tube TTI 1 7/8's on my 69 superbee (With a scatter shield) and had Zero fitment issues.

Left side was more difficult but not as bad with PS pump on.

That sucks. But these cars are still pretty new so it will take time for the aftermarket to catch up with good fitting parts.

:D

Not sure the aftermarket will

Hard to believe that some of our cars are now pushing 60 years old.
in the 70's a 32 Ford was only 30+ years old and I thought they were ancient .

Looks like you got the locking header bolts, are they hard to install? Some bolts have very little clearance.

No, easy. Once torqued to spec, put the locks on and don't have to worry about them. Put the lock on to have a positive lock, then instal "C" clip. 12 point bolt and lock

You would think after these cars have been around 50-60 years plus companies like Hedman and Hooker would have adjusted the fixtures over the years to actually fit. Don't think I have ever installed a set of headers that didn't need a ding here or tweak there with a hammer.
