This is actually my first post and also first time experience with the 426 hemi . I've had RB & LB based engines making lots of power in the past but never the hemi . I just got into a 68 rt 4spd car with A freshly rebuilt hemi to factory specs . The only additions are edelbrock (I think 650cfm) carbs and an msd distributor . I didn't want to open the engine up and was looking for easy / easily revers-able mods to boost power . I was thinking along the lines of headers , msd box, electric fuel pump , anything else ? Also was going to put 4.10s out back . Any help / advice is appreciated . Thanks

MO 3.73's MAX. Put 4.10's in my Satellite big mistake. First time on highway 3400 rpm an everything is passing me.
(EDIT: 27.2" tire not a 26" tire) 3 miles on the highway cured me. Ran 3.54's for years, drove 350 mile trips no problem.

Not looking to do nitrous or power adders , just looking to maximize the original hemi's potential ... Also probably going to be running 275/60/15 which should raise the 4.10s

A 650 cfm carb is way to small for a hemi !! It's being starved !

He has two carbs on the Hemi
                save the manifolds
                stock compression and cam?
adjust your valves if mechanical lifters- then they should run fine for a long time
save your money for good gas
When I was service manager at a dealer during this time frame the biggest problems we had was plug fouling and keeping them in tune.
I'd do some serious research on what plugs, wires (spiral wound "Mag> wires work best) and ignition box work best
you do not need race stuff- just something that does not foul
put in O2 sensors and get your tune correct
you have AVS2 carbs? good choice- now tune
get above done B4 thinking of headers (do you like your stereo?)
                youhave Dana 60?
no gear change till you get your tune perfect
I see no need for electric fuel pump- except
Do you have a return line in your fuel system?
The venting type of fuel filter?
change your fuel filter and see
insulating your fuel line and having a return really helps with vapor lock
                electric pump will help there
cold air to the carbs- if it gets cold where you are then you want exhaust heat to the air intake
cold hemis are no fun and how do you get exhaust heat with headers?
this is assuming that you want to drive it
and do not put a really stiff clutch in it
                genuine Dana-Spicer U joints-no junk check yours
                suspension and brakes tip top?
wide wheels and radial tires like stiffer torsion bars

Just checked my tire size, 215-78-14. My tires 742 revolutions per mile, your size tire 721 rev per mile. 4.10s ok for 10 miles on highway, if you go 50 miles gets old. 3.91's and the tall tire better. In the end it's your car.

Really good info, it was rebuilt to factory stock 68 specs other than the addition of the msd distributor and edelbrock carbs .

I ran dual 750 Edelbrock (1407's) on my old 426" Hemi. Adjjusted the jets and metering rods accordingly. It ran great on the street. Had a progressive linkage also. Hemi''s love cfm.

Never had any big block that didn't like CFM and a Hemi should like it more than any wedge head engine. And I've always been a fan of tall rear tires and plenty of gear. Is an OD unit like a GV OD in the cards? If so, then you could go with even more gear and still be able to cruise.

I agree. My current 528" loves dual 1050 Dominator carbs for the street and a ton of spray for the track.

                        4:10 with a 31 inch tall tire puts me at 2800 to 3000 rpm @ 60mph.

Are headers worth it to do on basically a stock 426?

                              Headers vs stock exhaust.

Every car I've ever had ran a better number with headers at the track. Dyno pulls are a good way to compare stuff but actual 1/4 mile times is a better dyno imo.

Hemi's need to breath a good exhaust system helps.
