Probably a different vendor that's all. I have never seen a production car with black tips... But have seen plenty of Nos spot welded tips in black over the years...Any reasoning why some were black instead of orange

Sort of .... but not quite.....the strip was part of the trim package (GTX) perhsps not optional like the exhaust pipe ends..... but....to each his/het own tastes....Kind of like the stripe going down the side of your car.
I believe the machine gun tips were the coolest exhaust tip ever made across the entire muscle car lineupSort of .... but not quite.....the strip was part of the trim package (GTX) perhsps not optional like the exhaust pipe ends..... but....to each his/het own tastes....

If someone could make a machine gun tip that has a removable outer slotted case so that the inner pipe paint could be maintained that would be trick and maybe add some faux spot welds as well. The 71's were all about flash. I agree the tips fit right in with the theme.

Has anyone ever restored a factory tip by separating the outer shell from the inner pipe ?I'm working on that... but want to find somebody able to apply a high temp powder coat in Venezuela.
The outer shell could be attached to the rear section, just like resonators are to the pipes
Did they use any spot welds on those or just a mig weld beadBought these about 10 years ago when there weren't many options. All stainless 3 inch exterior and the insert is not stainless. I'm disassembling so I can paint the insert. When they go back together I'll use set screws instead of welding.

Interesting your car has resonators. I've always thought they were on Hemi's or in some cases six packsI thought I would include pictures of the original exhaust. mufflers, resonators and tips on my 73 Roadrunner GTX "U" Code. I have since replaced all with accurate exhaust pieces.
