I am a new member to the forum and the recent owner of a 72 Charger with a 1970 383 and 4 speed manual transmission. I have pulled the engine which is undergoing a rebuild and have come across an A body overdrive unit for short money. I was looking for input into what is involved in placing one of these units into a B body. What modifications would be necessary. I understand that this is not the strongest transmission but I am planning on building more of cruiser than a quarter mile car. Any help would be appreciated

First, welcome. Second, the A body trans has a short tail on it. Due to a difference on the front of the main shafts, you can NOT swap the tail housing and main shaft between the two units. The good thing is there is a long tail version of the OD that came in trucks.

If you were willing to drop a few coins I'm sure it would be possible to make the regular (readlong) shaft work with the OD input shaft. AS FAR AS I KNOW that is the only difference. But you could contact Passion transmissions and they would be able to tell you 100%

I believe 69 is correct that you can just swap the main shaft and tail housing.

And yes, Passon will be your best resource for this.

The A body trans will not work in a 72 Charger. The shifter mounting is in different places, the OD trans also has a bigger bearing retainer and will not go into the big block bell housing. If you know a good machinist you can have the fron bearing retainer milled down, and use the truck trany. You will need to dril and tap the rear shifter mounting bosses though.
