Massive explosion in local candy store..

Happened here late yesterday afternoon. The footage is insane. Still searching for people today in the rubble with pouring down rain. IMO it could have been worse as far as casualties. Getting anywhere from 2 confirmed to a possible total of 7 still too early..

I'm about a half mile from this and could clearly see the thick smoke and tons of apparatus from surrounding stations with regular binoculars from the back deck shortly after it happened. Still hearing 2 confirmed fatalities.

This video says 2 deaths.. Was hearing 1-2 and 5-6 missing. Still incredibly low numbers for that time of day.. Amazing it was caught on camera.

Anyone who is involved in the manufacturing/storing of chocolate products, (as a family member of mine has been for 20+ years at the executive level) will tell you that temperature control is a critical part of the process. Having a west-facing brick building necessitates reducing summertime temperatures by whatever means possible.

Palmer Candy is a major confectionary on the East coast. Think just about any foil wrapped Santa Claus/Easter Bunny, or hundreds of novelty chocolates are all made there. Look at the Easter candy aisle in your Walmart, at least half of the holiday stuff is theirs.

I'll bet it was a gas explosion on machinery. Looks like a horrific explosion....surprised anyone got out of that building alive.


Or as an outside chance.....a hot water boiler exploded. Like a giant hot water cylinder....they can blow a house apart easily. Stuck thermostat.

some of the dust in the manufacturing processes are very volatile
flour & corn (dust) are 2 that do that, I'd assume cornstarch too

could be a number of causes, chemical, electrical, water
(or a pressurized vessel of something)
& gas, propane or natural gas too
something like mentioned above

or smoething deliberate, a bomb

Thanks I have no idea about the process. Something malfunctioned for sure or someone wasn't doing their job monitoring it. I am sure they will know what happened soon but most likely there is NEVER a follow up story on how this stuff happens!! It's always on to the next story..

A stream boiler can do that. Runs out of water gets red hot all of a sudden stuck water valve or somebody turns one on.BOOM.

They said on the news early this morning they found someone in the rubble last night. They were still alive but it was touch and go whether they were going to make it.

There was confusing numbers last night about the deaths but it was straightened out this morning. Two deaths and five missing.

Mayor Samantha Kaagof is also a first responder and has been working the scene. Very tight nit community.

Saw the reports early this morning. Horrific explosion, amazingly caught on a traffic cam of all things.
Imagining what it must have been like. I mean, who would have conceived of such a thing if you had
a job working in a candy factory, of all things?
From some of the early "after" video I've seen, there's tons of natgas-fed fires roasting huge.
Leads me to thinking a gas explosion also.

The one thing that hasn't come to my mind at any point - at all - though?
Making fun of anything to do with the situation.
That's flucked up.
Prayers for all involved, including their families - AND the first responders who came upon what had to
be a truly gruesome scene.

I don't see anyone making fun of it. Was there a post that was changed or deleted?
