Mechanics creeper

We live in the mountains so my creeper take off down the driveway every time I'm not on it. I agree with the cardboard. When I'm under a car, I'll take all the arm room I can get.

I like the pads that you can get at Summit. Folds in half when not in use. Gives way more clearance when under the car. Very comfortable.

I rarely use a creeper, for this reason....tightening a bolt and the creeper starts moving. I cant stand it.
Same here. I have an old wooden creeper that I've had forever and I rarely use it anymore. For years I've used a scrap piece of carpeting that I cut to about 4'X6". It's free, warm and comfortable, stays where you put it and catches dripping oil and rolling tools. When it gets too grubby I just throw it out and cut a new piece. If you are working on a car that's up on jackstands that 2 or 3 inches that a creeper takes up makes a lot of difference, especially if you are as old as I am and and can't see stuff up close.

When my old big money Snap On creeper died, basically the wheels failed mainly,
I had a brainstorm {or brainfart maybe}
I couldn't find anything I liked or that was what I wanted that wasn't $250-$500 or
some ridiculous amount of $$$ for a damn creeper, so I made my own...

I took another cheepo one $69.99 Grand Auto POS I had from a long time ago &
made it a low rider & made external outboard side wheel pods
with 2" x 1/4 flat stock I bent 4 of them up in the vise & added some gussets
to lower the main body, using small outboard ball bearing wheels,
along with some added tool trays, 1 above my head & 1 on each side
for when I was working with jack stands,

It helps to keeps you away from fluids/stuff better/lower too, off the damn floor
{you can see where the old org. wheels were, underside photo, it was about 4"'s taller},
it gives you places to store my/your hand tools, wrenches & air ratchets etc.

I should have put bigger wheels on it, but works really well except for,
with larger wheels {pneumatic too} would no doubt make it easier to go over stuff...
anyway a couple hrs with a welder/grinder & some scrap metal
{maybe some store bought, larger wheels...LOL}
you can/could do wonders...

Never knew how much the simplest things, like a couple of tool trays,
one above my head rest & one on either side,
it makes things on your back way easier,
way less getting out from under the car or
searching for tools that you ultimately will run over
or scattered under the car, just when you have one hand occupied with a task &
always seemingly will need another wrench or tool etc.,
wallah shazam it's right by your side or above you head in easy reach...lol

I could be improved on, I will someday, but I've used it for well over a decade now...

I also use a big piece of cardboard or carpeting remnants, from time to time too,
I prefer not being on the floor thou, sometimes you need to do what you have to do...
I'm getting way to old {too stiff afterwards} to be on cold or hot concrete,
all damn day too...

She's a little rough, thrown together quickly/hastily,
but she gets the job done, really close to ground level too &
not being on the floor, saves my old bones too !!

My new shop will have a lift again...

Having long hair for most of my life, I got pretty good using a piece of tempered Masonite to lay on and I would use the lid off of a tote to slide my tools around in under the car. Great it the pits and the garage. I had the one side labeled,"This Side Up" on the board to keep my side clean.
