Modify Dana 60 or buy aftermarket?

Strange rears, also don't require a case-spreader to change gears.

A good friend, had me add to his buy-in to become a Strange dealer. We all did well.
Loaded-60, 4 wheel brakes, and front DA shocks.

Thanks DL.

I’ve been high 8 second quarter mile times on a stock Dana 60 with only aftermarket axles due to the NHRA requirement. The Dana currently under your car can handle everything you can throw at it and then some. I finally upgraded to a spool last year to go low 8s and have a the axles listed for sale. You’ll need green bearings if you’re adding disk brakes.

I bought a brand new S 60 from Strange last year 3.54 gears, stock specs for my 71 Charger R/T. It was $3019.00 Shipped.

Being a dealer for Strange, there is quite a difference in price purchasing a rear axle with or without a brake package. Yes, an S60 can be bought for just over $3k shipped but NOT with a Wilwood disc brake package.
If the OP does go with a S60 with aftermarket disc brakes I would highly recommend building the housing using the large Ford Torino (late) 9” housing ends. That way, you’ll be using a real tapered and correctly sealed axle bearing instead of the imported disliked ‘green’ ball bearings.
Just my .02…

I concur. Thats what I have for my 65. Got it from the Doc. Sell that stocker to someone doing a resto and needing date codes etc. Might even make a little.

I built my Dana 60 from a one ton truck. Yes, they are thicker wall and heavier, but my car is an all steel, full interior cruiser/race car. With all Strange Engineering parts, billet aluminum caps, 40 spline gun drilled l.w. axles, l.w. spool with 4:10 Pro Gear and Pro Series calipers and rotors with girdle support cover. I have about $1700.00 into mine.

I hope you weighed it before install. I'd love to know.
I bought an aluminum center with a spool and 4.10s for my 9", and was surprised how heavy it was. Billet caps, pinion support, and ten bolts for the support..
I'd have to weigh the center again, but memory says a bit over sixty pounds.
I haven't weighed the whole rear, but it has summers axles and wilwood brakes, and a reinforced stock-style housing.

Years ago someone took the driveline out of my 71 Charger R/T. The car came from the factory with a 440 Magnum, 18 spline 4 speed and a Dana 60 rear axle. The car had a Ramcharger hood too. The car was a well known Connecticut street racer back in the day. After seeing the prices people wanted for a third generation B body Dana 60,I decided that the brand new Strange unit was the best way to go for this car.

Supposedly the entire driveline still exists together in another car, unfortunately it is not for sale.

I’m definitely going to go aftermarket, seems like Strange is a unanimous choice. I don’t know much about details tho on rears. What’s the issue with green bearings? Leak or break or something?

Also, the plan for this project, if some of you could give detailed suggestions on a rear, is to make this a ~600hp daily driver after work that I can occasionally take to track days (Laguna seca is a couple hours away). The other goal is to take long road trips so good reliability and not too crazy gearing would be ideal.

We're of similar minds. On my 65 project, the main focus is to run at Buttonwillow, Willow Springs and Thunderhill. Some Solo/Autocross in there as well. Possibly an occasional jaunt to Famosa. I like the twisty stuff, its more fun!

Contact Cass at Doctor Diff a Strange Engineering dealer, he saved me a lot of headaches by helping me pick my S60. You can go to his website and build your S60 rear end.

Here are the details of my invoice. You can call strange directly and the guy I got was very knowledgeable and helpful. Tell him what you want to do with your car and he will give you recommendations and explain everything. When all your questions are answered he emails a firm quote with clickable links to everything on the invoice. Make any changes, get a revised quote if needed and then you have a good solid idea of what you want and what it costs.

If you want not-too-crazy gearing, AND a dana 60, you've GOT to speak to Dr. DIFF.
Factory gear choice for not-too-crazy is only 3.55. (4.10 is the other factory choice).
Dr.Diff had 3.23s made and I believe he is the only source.
There are two alternatives. A 9" Ford has an unbelievable selection of gear ratios, or you could find a Dana 61, which can have a 3.07 gear in it. Truck or van. You will have to find the 3.07, used, not available new. Dana 61s are now considered obsolete. You would have to have a shop narrow it, buy axles, brakes, and your core better have a lsd in it, cause I don't think they are available new, (could be wrong about that). A 60 sure grip won't work.
