I agree with Colt for the 19th & 20th century handguns. Specifically, the SAA & 1911.

However, General George S. Patton famously praised the M1 Garand rifle, calling it "the greatest battle implement ever devised" in a January 1945 letter to the Chief of Ordnance.

To answer more seriously, I would have to suggest due to its ubiquitous appearance in dozens (hundreds?) of movies and legendary status, and the antithesis of the AK-47...it has to be the M16/AR-15.

1895 Trapper, they do make others in that caliber...
I like the Trapper's stainless & synthetic stocks, with the old western style of a bigger lever action
not real sweet on a 45-70, I have other rifles for what the 45-70 could do,
